In 1846, the Mexican government granted land to American Andrew White in what is now La Palma. In 1863, the U.S. sent a military force to quell the Pueblo Revolt and establish control over Rancho La Palma. The military occupation led to increased infighting among the local Native Americans, and by 1887, it was clear that few people wanted to live on the rancho anymore. With legal title to only 3% of Rancho La Palma (the rest being shared with Mexico), the United States decided not to renew its lease in 1886 and sold it off for $15 million dollars to Juan Bautista Carrillo y Torres.
