La Palma, California is a small town in Ventura County, California. It is located on the Pacific Ocean and has a population of just over 10,000 people. The town was founded in 1892 by brothers Lorenzo and Manuel La Palma. The two were both born in Chile and moved to the United States when Lorenzo was only six years old. They started a small grocery store in their home town before moving to Ventura in 1893. La Palma became an incorporated municipality in 1907. In 1924, it merged with neighboring Port Hueneme to form the city of Ventura. The original town site had been part of Point Conception Island which was later renamed Angel Island after American Commodore John C. Angelucci who captained one of America's first Navy vessels there during World War II. After America's victory at Okinawa during World War II, Japan took control of Angel Island and began demolishing buildings there including the grocery store where Lorenzo and Manuel La Palma operated their business until they sold it to the United States government for $1 million in 1945. The U.S Naval Base at Point Conception now occupies much of what used to be La Palma; however, some parts of the original town remain today such as its courthouse and post office building (now a museum). The current community developed around three main areas: shopping malls near Interstate 5 (the A-Rod Way Mall), housing developments nearby Interstate 805 (Langstaff Village), and beaches along Isla Mujeres which are adjacent to downtown Los Angeles proper on Southern California's Central Coast
