La Mirada is a small town in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 1,976 at the 2010 census. La Mirada has been inhabited since the late Paleolithic era. It was first known as "Tuma" and then "Hume." The original mission in La Mirada was founded by Father Junípero Serra on December 12, 1769 as Mission San Gabriel Arcángel de Tuma. At its peak it had about 350 residents and operated for three decades. However, with no Mexican immigrants coming to America during the post-independence period and American settlement increasing, the missions began to collapse in numbers and resources. They were eventually closed by 1853 due to their low productivity combined with increased American competition for land in Inyo County. By 1858 there were only eighty-six residents living in La Mirada proper; however, many of these had connections to nearby towns such as Cerritos or Ontario because they used those towns as posts of transhipment between Mexicali and Yuma City back east. However after years of debate over whether La Mirada should be made an incorporated municipality or remain unincorporated primarily because of its cultural significance (the community hosted one of the few remaining nineteenth century dancing academies), on February 1st 1868 a vote was taken by the citizens of La Mirada Township (later renamed Imperial Valley) to incorporation into Imperial Valley through Measure B which passed with 60% support from all precincts within that township save one where only two-thirds voting took place (the second precinct also failed to ratify incorporation). The Township was divided into blocks until it became an incorporated municipality on February 8th 1912 when all Blocks established themselves within Imperial Valley except Block 4 which remained unincorporated until 1959 when it merged into la Mirada Township again effective January 1st 1960 following Measure A which passed 57% majority from all precincts within Municipality boundaries with only two precincts failing to participate.) In 1928 Ansel Adams photographed what he called his "lost village", now part of downtown LaMirada – a tiny enclave along Rancho Santa Fe just south of State Route 20 where people collected watermelons from irrigation ditches while Mexicans worked off their labor visas at nearby mines The1920s saw much development around La Mirida resulting in several new businesses opening up including Three Gables Store & Cafe opened by Mrs. Lillie Pugh Morehead who ran it until her death in 1976; Harry's Department store opened up behind Mrs Morehead's storeoco; a post office been built east of Main Street near present day Asphalt Road; Stoneware Works & Glasses opened next door to Harry's; finally Hotel del Corral added onto main plaza between Main and US streets serving primarily guests traveling through Tooba Airport
