La Mirada, California is a small town in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 7,826 at the 2010 census. It lies on the edge of the Santa Monica Mountains and is bordered by Malibu to the south, Playa del Rey to the east, West Hollywood to the north, and Hermosa Beach to the west. The first Europeans to enter what is now La Mirada were Mexican traders in 1819 who named it after Mirada de la Mora (the mountain). There was no permanent settlement until 1851 when James Fenton homesteaded some land near present-day Pacific Palisades Boulevard and El Camino Real. By 1860 there were about sixty-five people living hereabouts. In 1861 José María Guerrero set up a post office at Rancho La Brea with mail going from San Francisco to Orange County through Ventura County; this service ended in 1865 when Postmaster General George Washington Pearce moved his headquarters from Sacramento back eastward across State Route 68 into Anaheim Hills where he opened an new post office on November 1 of that year which continued until May 15th 1870 when privateer "Hercules" burned down much of downtown Los Angeles causing great damage but not destroying all of it as had been anticipated so many times before because warships could then be moored offshore waiting to bomb or shell targets ashore while departing without taking any prisoners or treasure! The only buildings remaining standing today are two old schoolhouses dating back to 1875–76 near Avenida Principal between First Street and Harbor Blvd., just northeast of Harbor Freeway off I-405/I-10 (Interstate 95), opposite Pioneer Square (largest shopping center in Los Angeles) Election results: Barack Obama won with 54% of the vote against John McCain’s 42%.
