In 1881, John D. Wesson bought a piece of land in La Mirada, California for $10,000. He named the property "Wesson Ranch" and began to build his ranch house on it. In 1902, he donated a rifle scope to the La Mirada Rifle Club and it has been in use at the club ever since. In 1907, Wesson donated another rifle scope to the club. The Scope Company was founded by Harry Kessler and Julius Klingler in 1907 as a business enterprise to produce high-quality rifle scopes. They made scopes with reticles that could be adjusted according to windmill movements or elevation changes so that shooters could target specific birds or animals at long range without having to measure distances manually. By 1922, the company had grown sufficiently that they moved their factory from New York City to La Mirada and started producing riflescopes under their own name as well as selling telescopes under other companies' brands such as Bausch & Lomb and Leupold. In 1941, Wesson died suddenly and his wife inherited his properties in California. She continued production of riflescopes at her homes until her death in 1984; thereafter, the company was passed down through her children until it finally came into being owned by Celestron Corporation in 1990. At Celestron's request, all of Wesson's products were retired from production starting in 1995 but some are still available for sale online today (see below).

La Mirada, California is a small community located in San Diego County, California. It is bordered by the city of San Marcos to the south and east, and Encinitas to the north. The population of La Mirada was 3,814 as of the 2010 census. The first permanent residents were Spaniards who landed on Isla de Cuyamaca in 17 carrying vines and seeds with them. In 1871 Mexican settlers arrived with families and began to grow corn, beans, watermelons, tomatoes and other vegetables. By 1920 there were over 100 families living in La Mirada. In 1951 it became an incorporated town when it saw an increase in commercial development spurred by military exercises that took place at Naval Station Coronado near La Mesa. Notable businesses include Hecht's Department Store which opened in 1955 and remains a local landmark today; Sears Roebuck & Co., now Kmart; Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company (now GEICO); AnheuserBusch Brewery; ABC Television Corporation; The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Group (now Marriott); The Huntington Beach Marina Resort & Casino; and Pajaro Valley College which offers both undergraduate degrees (Bachelor’s degrees) as well as graduate level programs such as business administration, law enforcement/security science/lawyer/paralegal studies etc.. On December 4th 2003 La Mirada voters passed Measure T3 which provided for a new fire protection district within San Diego County including La Mirada. This allowed for easier annexation of neighboring communities without having to go through the county Board of Supervisors. On January 10th 2004 construction started on what would become Vista Del Rey Park - one of several large developments located around La Mesa since Measure T3 was passed-- contributing significantly to the current growth rate in LaMirada not only because of its location but also due to its unique character combining open space with close-to-the-community amenities such as tennis courtspools, playgrounds, basketball courts and more than 100 residences all facing downtownLa Mesa! Today there are over 1,500 people living within walking distance of DowntownLa Mesa!

In 1821, the area now known as La Mirada was part of Rancho San Francisco Mexican land grant to José Antonio Camacho. The first house built on the present-day site was a log cabin by American Colonel George W. Hill in 1825. On December 12, 1847, a small group of men led by José Manuel de la Peña set off from Pueblo del Paso for what would be their final attempt to explore and colonize California. They named their new settlement after La Brea Tar Pits in Southern California - El Centro (The Center). On April 19, 1850, Mexico ceded California to the United States as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. La Mirada began rapid growth due to waves of new immigrants - primarily Mexicans - arriving during the Gold Rush period in 1851 and 1852. In 1862, following the Mexican-American War, it became an independent city under US jurisdiction with its own mayor and council system. During World War II, La Mirada played host to several Naval Air Station activities including Naval Air Station Alameda and Naval Air Station San Diego. After the war ended in 1945, La Mirada experienced significant growth as a result of its status as both a commercial center and bedroom community for coastal communities such as Pacific Beach and Encinitas
