La Mirada, California is a small town in San Diego County, California. The first European to visit the area was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542, when he explored what is now southern California for Spain. He named the bayla after his sister's husband, Tepeyacumalco (Tehuacan), who accompanied him on his voyage from Mexico City to Monterey Bay. In 1769–70 Father José Altamirano explored parts of present-day La Mesa and Point Loma before establishing missions at Rancho Santa Fe de las Flores y las Nieves (now part of Carlsbad). Mexican Mission District map dated January 8, 1772 shows Mission San Miguel Arcángel overlooking Point Lobos; this mission may have been founded by Father José de la Garza y Valdés as early as 1765 although no evidence exists to support this claim. Mexican land grants were made available for settlement following Mexico's independence from Spanish rule in 1821 through a process known as "bonanza farming." After Mexicans gained their own government in 1829 they began granting land titles deeds which formed Rancho Laguna del Norte (later Rancho La Mesa). This rancho included present-day La Mirada Village which was founded December 4, 1907 by Jens Jensen et al., merchants from Copenhagen who arrived in Los Angeles on November 3 via steamship SS Columbia anchored off endorphin Island just south of Point Loma where they unloaded goods brought overland from Sutter's Mill aboard shipmates' horses while en route back home across North America
In 1847, the Mexican government ceded California to the United States. As part of the treaty, Mexico agreed to a series of restrictions on its citizens' movement within the state. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo also provided for American control over all land east of the Rocky Mountains, which included what is now Los Angeles County. Nearly one hundred years later, in 1924, San Diego became an incorporated city and La Mirada was annexed as well.
