Father Junipero Serra landed here on September 22nd 1769 while making a missionary trip from Mission San Gabriel Arcangelico in southern California across what are now Orange County and Riverside County to Mission San Fernando Rey del Río in northern Los Angeles County (the Spanish mission complex). Historically part of Rancho Santiago de las Palmas y Las Cañadas which encompassed much of eastern Riverside County, La Mirada became an independent city when it annexed Rancho Santiago ceded by Manuel Nieto to George Witteveldt in 1872 during Witteveldt's attempt to purchase all remaining ranchos east of Pasadena from José Antonio Yorba Pico without due process or compensation for squatters or others who had made homes there without landowner consent. The annexation created a new city government with its own mayor and City Council which began meeting on May 1st 1873. After incorporation LAMIRADA CITY CODE OF LA MIRADA was adopted effective July 1st 1874! In 1886 when annexation completed Allende founded Tuolumne Meadows Golf Club outside town limits adjacent to Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base where today’s USMC Post #1 stands
