This law made gun ownership more difficult but also allowed firearm owners to defend themselves against criminals and other threats. Gunswivels remained popular until the early 1900s when Prohibition began causing many Americans to lose access to their guns. As prohibition ended, gunswivels became less common and slowly fell out of favor among American citizens. La Mirada, California is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 9,788 at the 2010 census. It is situated on the eastern edge of San Bernardino County and is bordered by Fontana to the south and east, Ontario to the north, and Chino Hills to the west. The name "La Mirada" means "the bright one." The community was first established as a cattle ranch in 1887 by Captain John Sutter. Many people from nearbyOntario moved here during the late 19th century because of its fertile land and good water quality for irrigation. La Mirada's post office opened in 1892. From 1905 until 1959 it was known as Fontana. In 1959 La Mirada became an unincorporated community within San Bernardino County when that county merged with Kern County. In 1987 it became an incorporated city with a mayor-council form of government. The population hit 10,816 in 2000 but has since decreased due to various factors such as high housing prices and lack of jobs outside of city limits (city fathers have stated they would like to annex more rural land). The history of La Mirada can be traced back over 120 years as part of Rancho Cucamonga Co., which began operations in 1850 along what is now FM 1766 east of present day LaMirada Boulevard.. In 1911 Captain Jens Olsen bought part of Rancho Cucamonga Co., including present-day la miradar Road(now I-10), for $5000 dollars less than its value at the time! captain olsen built his home on this property which still stands today - he named it after his purchase - la mira d'or! Upon arriving in town he put up two posts/trees near where Main Street meets Eastlake Drive today's Town Hall building...This area now becomes Orchard Park with plenty or apples trees etc! Some other early settlers were H J Ralston who started farming on section 12 off Old US HWY 4 just before US HWY 26 crossed into their lot next door; Capt Ralston also had some peach trees on section 16 across from Red Deck restaurant now known as Harbor Freight store... George McFarlane also settled down around here about 1886 or so married a woman called Jane who came from Ontario... lots more later same folks died away leaving their children behind & when they got wise they sold all their holdings & went backpacking thru North America stopping at different places along way... By 1912 there must have been 8 families living here (& yes kids born HERE too) most likely headed back home again by then!! Today we know most all these folks through direct descendants or family memories Captain John Sutter arrived in 1887 from Russia via Ellis Island looking for new territory toclaim after Mexico's independence from Spain.....After monthsof surveys & exploration he located what would becometoday's LaMiraDia area extending 3 miles northeastward along present day I-10 east past Del Mar Lake towards Kaweah River............He named his new arrivalland grants RanchoCucamongaCo.(nearpresentdayFontanasouthendofI-10).........Sutter'sbrother Eli foundedanother rancheseedingoperation nearbyonOldUSHwy 26about 1900.......By1911theremusthavebeeneightfamilieslivinghere(&yes kids born HERE too)mostlikelyheadedbackhomeagainbythen!!Todayweknowmostallthesefolksthroughdirectdescendantsorfamilymemories
