In 1909 painter Edward Hopper purchased land adjacent to La Brea Adobe and built an Episcopal Church there called All Souls'. The imposing neo-Gothic structure still stands today and can be seen from much of downtown La Mirada. In 1927 Norma Shearer purchased property adjoining her childhood home near Malibu Creek which she used as her home and writing studio until her death in 1984; this property now forms part of the Hollywood Hills neighborhood of Beverly Hills. Actress Katharine Hepburn also resided here during some parts of her career while filming otherprojects in nearby Westwood Village proper. Burt Reynolds moved into his own house here between 1974-1976 after purchasing Lighthouse Point Estates adjacent to Highway 1 about 2½ miles (3 km) north of town center across Buena Park Boulevard from then-Mayor Dianne Feinstein; Reynolds developed Lighthouse Point into one of Southern Californias most popular retirement communities with its own golf course and clubhouse overlooking Calabasas Sound

In 1916, the La Mirada area was annexed by Imperial County. In 1928, the state of California annexed Imperial County to its growing population. The name "La Mirada" was chosen to honor a small community in nearby Riverside which had been founded in 1892 as a farmstead on an elevation above sea level. The town developed around a military post and trading center established there in 1903 by Colonel George Armstrong Custer. Many people from La Mirada moved to Southern California during the late 1800s when it became available due to dramatic reductions in natural resources prices and advances in transportation. During World War II, Los Angeles troops used La Mirada for storage and for eventual assembly at San Fernando Valley munitions plants. On September 9, 1944, Japanese forces bombed the town killing more than 50 people and wounding over 150 others including many children who were playing outside their homes. The bombing remains one of the most deadly attacks on American civilians during World War II.
