La Mirada is a small town in southern California. It is located on the Pacific Coast and has been inhabited by people for over 2,000 years. La Mirada’s history began with the arrival of Spanish missionaries in 1769. The mission was founded on a small island in what is now downtown La Mirada. The native inhabitants soon deserted the island, so the Spaniards built their own chapel on the mainland. In 1821, when Mexico acquired California, La Mirada became part of Mexican territory and remained that way until 1912 when it became an independent state. In 1916, La Mirada voters approved a resolution to make it an annual science fiction convention center and popular entertainment destination for the region. The first convention took place in November of that year and featured writers such as Henty Lee (Dune), Isaac Asimov (The Foundation Trilogy), George Orwell ( Animal Farm), Ray Bradbury ( Fahrenheit 451), Clark Ashton Smith ( Dune) and more than 100 other entertainers from all over North America. The second convention was held in October 1920 and featured writers such as Damon Knight ( Conan the Barbarian), H Rider Haggard ( King Arthur ), Robert E Stevenson( Treasure Island ), James Branch Cabell( Westward Ho!), Ayn Rand( Atlas Shrugged ) and more than 150 other entertainers from all over North America. After World War II ended, conventions stopped being held at La Mirada because there wasn’t enough space available or because too many people were coming to visit instead of staying there to work or study. However, since 1978 when revenues from air rights made it possible to build a new Convention Center adjacent to downtown LaMirada, conventions have again taken place at this location annually during our summer season! Unfortunately, Hurricane Katrina destroyed much of downtown LaMirada during Katrina’s landfall on August 29th 2001 so we will not be able to hold another convention until after reconstruction is complete!
