Only a few hundred people lived in La Mirada when World War II began; it grew rapidly with wartime production plants such as Ford's Palmdale Assembly Plant, Kaiser Aluminum Company's Mattel Research Laboratories, Lockheed Martin Aircraft Corporation'sLos Padres Aircraft Plant and many other companies that built planes for American pilots during World War II. More than 100% of all housing built in Los Angeles County during this time were single-family homes; only 10% were assigned to military use as barracks or storage facilities for aircraft parts or materials destined for overseas war efforts. During most of these years there was no school system within reach so children attended day cares or churches until they could go to school full time starting around age six or seven then attend high schools until college level courses became available around age 12 or 13 depending on family resources. A 1944 study done by UCLA Environmental Studies professor Jerald Sussman found that almost half of those working at Mission San Gabriel Arcangel had no formal education beyond sixth grade while more than 60%of workers at Boeing Plants Escondido and Long Beach had only primary grades K through 4th grade! This pattern continued into the postwar period with nearly all new jobs coming down through skilled trades rather than having students majoring in academics before moving onto more advanced degrees like business administration or law! Smith. In addition to its role as a commercial stop for travelers coming down the Los Angeles River, the pier also served as a staging area for naval maneuvers during World War I and II.
