It has been a long history of airguns in La Mirada, California. The first guns were pistols that used compressed air to shoot targets. Rifle shooters also enjoyed using airguns for target shooting. After World War I, regulations began to be put in place to control the use of firearms and handguns became more limited in what they could be used for. These regulations led to the development of airguns as an alternative firearm method. The first commercial guns using compressed air were made by Gustav Loesch in 1912. Compressed gas guns quickly replaced pistols as the mainstay weapon type for target shooting in North America. The popularity of these new types of guns allowed companies such as Smith & Wesson and Colt to begin developing their own designs specifically tailored towards the needs of rifle shooters and handgun owners alike. By 1930, rifles had become common enough among American citizens that handgun sales started declining while Airgun sales continued to grow rapidly throughout this period (Figure 1). By 1935, however, rifle shootings had once again surpassed handguns in popularity so handgun production resumed its upward trend (Table 2). In 1946, Congress passed legislation designating all semiautomatic handguns as “firearms” which effectively banned all other types of firearms from being marketed under this name (Table 3). However, even though semiautomatic handguns dominated the market share during this time frame, Airgun sales still grew significantly due largely to marketing efforts by GUNSMANY INCorporated (www.gunsnationincorporation.com) which manufactured high-capacity compression-gas powered pellets(Figure 2)). In 1978 GUNSMANY INCorporated merged with Brownells Incorporated creating THE GAS FIREARMS COMPANY which continues today as one of America’s leading distributors and marketers of both traditional hand held firearms and Compressed Gas Pistols
