La Mesa is a small town located in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 13,879 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego–Carlsbad metropolitan area. La Mesa's ZIP code 82009 has a population of 17,146 as of the 2000 census. The community was founded in 1892 by pioneers who came from Mexico and were looking for a place to farm land that had been purchased by U.S. military forces in 1862 during the Mexican-American War. In 1912, La Mesa became part of the city of San Diego and had its first school built on what is now Main Street. The post office opened in 1915 and closed in 1960; it was reopened by mail service under the name "Mesa" until 1984 when it changed its name to "La Mesa." In 1957, businessman Wernher von Braun donated $10 million towards construction of what would become NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center; La Mesa became one of its original townsite residents. The center relocated there from Greenbelt Township, Maryland (then inside Howard County) after World War II ended and continued to grow through annexations over time: in 1979 it included an additional townsite within East La Mesa boundaries; and finally, in 1992 it annexed portions of Rancho Bernardo northward into the city limits – making La Mesa both largest municipality within City Park Neighborhood and second most populous subdivision within City Park Community overall after completion of Carlsbad Canyon Neighborship Plan.). La Mesa is a small town in the Central Valley of California, located about 25 miles east of Fresno. The population was 5,070 as of 2018. La Mesa is one of the oldest communities in the Central Valley and has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 10,000 years. It was founded by José Felipe Pacheco in 1853 on a depression in what is now downtown La Mesa. The post office at La Mesa was established on July 14, 1854, and served until it closed on December 6, 1912. In 1875, manmade Lake Hetch Hetchy was created as part of a larger irrigation project that also included La Mesa and other towns along the Feather River. The draining process created an artificial lake that remains to this day. Lake Hetch Hetchy became a major water source for Fresno County after its creation and irrigated much of the central valley. By 1902, however, irrigation had decreased due to problems with pests and disease; during World War I (1914-18), the United States Army built two large airfields at nearby Stockton and moved many people from La Mesa to work at these fields. When war ended, most residents returned home but some relocated to new homes outside of town; by 1932 half of the original population had left for various reasons including economic hardship or changes in lifestyle within central California (the Great Depression). In 1955–1956 American professor emeritus Gordon Parks led a group of students from San Diego State University through La Mesa to study human legends associated with Yosemite National Park; their report formed the basis for his history textbook series entitled "Ancient America: A History Through Its People." After Parks's death in 1957 his widow published an account entitled "A People's History Of Los Angeles: Overcoming Racism" which chronicled tensions between blacks and whites that persisted into recent times in such areas as education, housing/employment opportunities etc.; it received national attention when it appeared as chapter one article in Time magazine's November 15th edition under headline "Tensions flare over park access." In response Mayor Ralph Shriver called upon state legislators to pass legislation making park access open to all citizens without discrimination—an event that helped spur statewide momentum towards opening Yosemite National Park more fully to all Californians regardless race or ethnicity (see also Open Yosemite Act). In 1990 businessman Nolan Bushnell organized a drive known as Silicon Valley Pioneer Days which culminated with an event honoring him at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution where he delivered a speech recognizing advances made since 1965 when he first visited California’s Central Valley industrial heartland amid great promise for future technology development there (see also Silicon Valley Pioneer Day).
La Mesa was founded in 1872 by George Waterman. The town became a post office in 1873, and incorporated as a city in 1907. La Mesa is currently the largest city in Orange County with a population of over 167,000 people.
