La Mesa, California is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 1,880 at the 2010 census. It is located on the central coast of San Diego County and bordered by the city of La Jolla to the south and east, Scripps Ranch to the north, andMission Valley to the west. The eastern boundary of La Mesa borders City of Escondido to the southeast. The name "La Mesa" means "the old or high ground." In 1881, when Captain George Hearn surveyed this area for his Rancho Cuyamaca buyers' association which would later become known as Rancho La Hacienda Inc., he noted that there were no hills in sight but instead a flat stretch of beach with some bushes near shoreline. He named this place "Lake View," after one of his children's nurses who had nursed him while he was recuperating from an illness at sea. In 1907 when David Waddell bought land adjacent to what is now River Road and Highway 1 (now Interstate 5), he called it Lakeview Heights because there were only hills in view on either side of his property including those now visible from river road. Today much of that original ranch land still remains undeveloped except for a few homes and a small park located off River Road just east of Highway 1 within .5 miles (800 meters)of where Waddell's home once stood! The only area developed during my tenure as Mayor was along I-5 between University Boulevard/Highway 101 and Villa Park Drive (Waddell Street). I did all my campaigning inside our large open-air amphitheater just east of Villa Park Drive - it seats over 40 people! My predecessor during that time was Ed Gonzalez who also served as Mayor from 2003 until 2009; during his term we added several new homes onto what had been originally just lots - making La Mesa one OFPRA approved community! This makes me very proud since I am actually related to both men through their mothers!
