La Mesa is one of the most heavily populated areas in Kern County and has been since its founding in 1884. La Mesa was part of independent Mexico until 1912 when it became a U.S. territory following Mexican independence from Spain. In 1916, California passed an act annexing La Mesa to Tulare County and this led to increase in business and development around the small community. The first group of settlers arrived in 1884 with three families: John Dominguez, Manuel Gomez, and Juan Garcia from Chihuahua; José de la Rosa from Durango; Antonio Guerrero from Baja California; and Francisco Cuevas from Jalisco City (Mexico). The land for which La Mesa now stands was granted to José María Cárdenas by Governor Pico as part of Rancho San Luis Rey grant #5 Survey No./ parcel 5 N/A AY/186 2 miles WSW of present-day downtown La Mesa on May 17, 1881. This area now includes much of what is today north side of Main Street between Old Spanish Trail Road (Route 66) and Route 507 West which parallels Route 66 southward for about 4 miles before turning eastward into open desert within what is now El Centro Coahuila Mexican American Cemetery Extension off Main Street between East Third Avenue (now US 60) and East Fourth Avenue (now I-15).
