La Mesa, California is a small city located in San Luis Obispo County, California. The population was 12,814 at the 2010 census. La Mesa is part of the Santa Barbara-Santa Maria-Paso Robles Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now La Mesa were the Chumash Native Americans who lived on the east side of Point Conception Bay. They traded with the Europeans and built a few homes near Mission Santa Cruz. In 1821, José María Córdoba founded Rancho Los Arroyos de la Mesa on land that now includes much of La Mesa. The town began to form in 1875 when some residents moved from Morro Bay and established a new town site about two miles east of present day La Mesa Boulevard on Coyote Creek Road. Downtown La Mesa became an important commercial and cultural center soon after its founding. Many early businesses included stores such as Sock Monkey Tobacco Company, Hahn's Hardware Store and Folsom & Brothers cigars store; banks including First National Bank (founded 1865), State Bank (1876), Valley National Bank (1885) and American Trust Company (1902). A theater was opened in 1905 by Judge Jens Jensen and prospered for many years until it burned down in 1949. In 1942, during World War II, local farmers produced beef for military purposes; this led to increased demand for meat products which contributed to economic growth over the next several decades. During that time period also, significant expansion occurred within downtown La Mesa with new housing developments being built along both sides of Coyote Creek Road between 1906 and 1962 inclusive In recent years there has been significant redevelopment taking place within downtown areas adjacent to Interstate 5 so that retail establishments have replaced service stations along Coyote Creek Rd between I-5 southbound exit 4A/I-5 northbound exit 12A/I-5 westbound entrance 8A as well as numerous other areas throughout downtown LA MESA!

La Mesa, California is located in San Diego County and took its name from the La Mesa Mission. The mission was founded in 1769 by Father Francisco Lopez de Mendoza, and it served as a religious center for the Ohlone people until 1821. When Mexico gained independence from Spain in1822, the Mexican government decided to rename all of San Diego County "Alta California" (meaning "high country"), so La Mesa would not be included in this new territory. In 1853, during theMexican-American War, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered his forces to burn down the La Mesa Mission. This event is generally considered to be one of the earliest examples of ethnic cleansing in American history. In 1881, when San Diego became an incorporated city, it decided to change its name toLa Mesa because there was already a town named La Mesa on Rancho Santa Fe east of town. In 1926, City Councilmember Charles Wolk sponsored Resolution No. 598 which called for changing the name of La Mesa back toSan Diego because "it has been our home since historically." The resolution passed with only two dissenting votes and was placed on Mayor George Peña's agenda for consideration. On July 15th 1931Mayor Peña announced that he had prevailed upon city councilmembers Hilda Heredia and Ignacio Valdezto agree unanimously thereto that they adopt a resolution calling for reestablishing proper boundaries between San DiegansandLa Maestrasan Angeles City Limits effective immediately within three months following their respective elections; otherwise action would be taken pursuant to Sections 346a et seq., Penal Code Forcible Entry into California (article 2), against any citizens or residents thereof who did not comply with said resolutions no later than December 1st following their respective terms of office). After much debate as well as threats by some members of both housesof congress should such an act not be accomplished within ninety days thereafter (following enactment of Assembly Bill 7031 which granted full local control over cities situated within certain congressional districts including Los Angeles), MayorPeña's motion was finally carried out on January 25th 1932 with voting results showing him winning reelection over challenger Harry Goldsmith by a wide margin: 49% to 35%. The original boundaries between Los Angeles and Anaheim were more heavily populated areas now part of Orange County while still defined primarily around Anaheim Hills although parts beyond these limits are now part of Riverside County
On October 15, 1847, La Mesa residents voted to annex what is now the City of Irvine. The vote was taken after California became a state and La Mesa land became part of the new county.
