There has been a continuous presence of firearms in La Mesa, California since the 1800s. The first guns in La Mesa were pistols and rifles. These early firearms were used for hunting and protection. In 1851, the first store in La Mesa was established by George Wittell. Wittell was a rifle proprietor and shotgunner who stocked ammunition and gun supplies to local farmers. He also sold ice cream to locals on the premises. In 1861, Californian Civil War veteran John Burt opened his business as a buffalo hunter and shooting gallery at 8th and Oak Streets. This business served as an important meeting place for the townspeople during the war years. In 1872, Burt moved his business to 6th Street where he continued to operate until his death in 1902. The arrival of automobiles in La Mesa began to change the way people engaged in their lives around this time. Motor vehicles made it easier for people to get around without having to walk or ride bicycles. This allowed more people access to firearms which then became an important part of local criminal activity. As businesses catering exclusively to firearm enthusiasts opened up throughout La Mesa, crime decreased significantly due to increased access to safe storage spaces for these items along with other safety measures such as arming employees at all businesses with handguns when necessary

In 1825, William Lawrance built the first ranch on what is now La Mesa Heights. The town began to grow around this ranch, and by 1860 there were over 100 homes and businesses in La Mesa. The American Civil War ended with President Abraham Lincoln's assassination, and La Mesa quickly transitioned into a wartime town. Between 1861 and 1865, over 20 rifles were made in La Mesa alone, making it one of the most prolific gun manufacturing towns in California. After the war, many families moved from La Mesa to nearby Pasadena so that they could continue enjoying theirtarget shooting hobbies. La Mesa, California is a small town in Imperial County of southern California. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. La Mesa is located on the east side of San Diego and has an area of just under two square miles. It is bordered by Rancho Penasquitos to the north, Presidio Heights to the east, and Mission Hills to the south. The first Europeans to visit La Mesa were Spanish explorers in 1769–70 who found it uninhabited. Jesuit missionaries established a mission here in 1821. After Mexican independence from Spain in 1821, Mexican landholders began ranching here and fencing off portions of what became La Mesa for development as agricultural areas. In 1886, when part of San Diego County was created from parts of Imperial County, La Mesa was included within that new county's boundaries. In 1951, after years of debate over whether or not to build a dam at Lake Elsinore () upstream from La Mesa (), voters selected through referendum Proposition 13 (the "El Sobrante Dam Pollution Prevention Act") a water reuse plan which proposed using only groundwater recharge for irrigation purposes instead of traditional river diversion from mountain streams (). However, this proposal failed to garner enough support; it would not be implemented until 1990 when state legislation enacted via Proposition 6 allowed for both storage and use of water stored underground beneath several cities and towns throughout Southern California (). La Mesa is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 25,871 at the 2010 census. La Mesa is located on the eastern border of San Diego and has a combined total area of 26 square miles (79 square kilometers). La Mesa sits on the edge of Morongo Valley, which contains part of the Imperial Valley and one of the most diverse agricultural landscapes in North America. The first permanent residents in what would become La Mesa were American Indians who moved there from central California during the 1770s. European settlement began with Father Junipero Serra's Mission San Miguel de la Union in 1821. In 1826 Mexican land grantee José Joaquin María Cámpora founded Rancho Las Palmas near present-day La Mesa. In 1849 rancho owner Manuel Nieto sold part of his land to James Wacker for $8,000 In 1861Californian Joshua Humphreys built a cabin on an hilltop east ofpresent-day La Mesa for himself and his family. Humphreys had come as part of construction crew for Ulysses S Grant's Overland Mail route from Sacramento to Los Angeles via Tucson. On July 14, 1862 Humphreys' home was consumed by fire when unknown individuals set it alight while he slept in his bed; no one was ever arrested or charged with arson that night. It is likely that this event contributed to Grant's reputation as a " mischief maker". A post office called Encinitas opened in 1876 and remained open until 1984. The name change may have been due to pressure from then Mayor Edwin Salinas to establish a community line between Encinitas and Balboa Park after both cities saw increased development around their respective borders since they lost their municipal status following statehood withinSAN DIEGO COUNTY.. From 1886 until 1912, La Mesa was also known as El Cajon; this name may be related to an incident involving Spanish pioneers Pedro Cámpora and Juana Margarita Carmona Peralta during their exploration journey through what is now Northern Baja California on November 12–13, 1886 (). They named every village along their march Santa Clara del Valle de las Californias (“Valley of the Californias”), but arrived at another site called Rancho Coyote Creek because its soil did not contain more than cedar wood according to one source. A secondsource claims they changed it because locals were calling them los coyotes (the dogs) because they could smell food being cooked over hot coals in nearby missions.) After some reluctance by officials at Mission San Gabriel Arcángel property south of town renamed Coyote Creek Park after them (thus ending any confusion), local citizens voted 6–3 “in support”of changingthe name backto El Cajon upon realignment within SAN DIEGO COUNTY., urthering neighborhood identification with county boundaries rather than outside institutions like mission buildings.) As early as 1889 some farmers established themselves outside town limits growing fruits such as oranges . The discovery olives began attracting attention from Europeans about 1900 so many new streets were laid out parallelto US 101/19th Street including Laurel Street northwest corner today's Willowbrook Drive east side Berryessa Road southeast corner today's Quarry Lane Southwestern end inside old Powerball lot just past junction street off I-5 east side Pioneer Avenue) Today we see several small businesses down these streets: Puncheons Italian restaurant just southwest corner Laurel St & main drv., Guerreros Mexican restaurant across street Pioneer Ave., Basin Brewing Co., etc...."

La Mesa, California was founded in 1853 as a small trading post by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. The post served as the terminal of the Rancho San Diego Mexican land grant which was granted to José Joaquin Mora and his brother Manuel on November 15, 1846. In 1850, La Mesa became part of the newly created State of California.
