The history of La Mesa, California begins with the arrival of pioneers in 1848. The area now known as La Mesa was part of Rancho Santiago de Atascadero, which was granted to Juan Bautista Alvarado by King Carlos III of Spain. In 1853, the community's name was changed to Villa Park after Revolutionary War General José Antonio Villa. In 1859, the Mexican government sold Rancho Santiago de Atascadero to Hacienda rancher Manuel Nieto. In 1881, a new post office called Los Alamos opened in La Mesa and became an important center for cattle and cotton production. A sawmill and flour mill were built in 1888; both are still in use today. In 1902, a bridge over San Gabriel River was built near present-day Mira Loma Boulevard and it became a main route crossing the river. The following year, a gas works and reservoir were constructed at present-day La Mesa for city water supply purposes.
