La Mesa is a small town in Riverside County, California, United States. It is located on the border of Riverside and San Bernardino counties. La Mesa was established in 1892 as a result of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the Mexican–American War. The population was 5,887 at the 2010 census. The area that would become La Mesa was part of Rancho Cucamonga Coyoteca, granted to José Joaquin Mora by Governor Manuel Micheltorena on November 25, 1853. Mexicans called it "Coyoteca". On September 17, 1875, Rancho Cucamonga residents Josue Gomez and Francisco Rivera petitioned for incorporation as a village under the name "Villa de la Mesa" (later changed to La Mesa). In October 1888, voters approved incorporation by an 82% majority. The first post office opened in 1889 with Wm Atherton as its firstmaster; it closed in 1912 due to lack of mail service from nearby Spring Valley. In 1916 Santiago Carrillo became mayor after being elected uncontested over incumbent Tomás Olivas; Carrillo served two terms before leaving office to run for governor in 1920 and 1924. During his tenure as mayor he developed what would later become known as Carrillo Park. Carrillo also helped found what is now Chino Hills High School in 1919 and founded Our Lady Of The Angels Catholic Church in 1922.
