La Mesa, California is a city in San Diego County, California. The population was 34,695 at the 2010 census. La Mesa is located on the eastern side of San Diego and bordered by Otay Mesa to the north, La Jolla to the east and south, and Circle K to the west. The first Europeans to visit La Mesa were members of an American party led by Captain Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 20, 1542. Juan's group sailed from Monterey Bay and anchored off what is now known as Point Loma on November 6. They built a small butfortship thereon which they named "El Mirador." After exploringCA coasts for several years they returned home in 1546 with five new men including Cabrillo's brother-in-law Manuel de la Bodega y Valdés. On May 25, 1769 Father José Altuve organized a Mission San Antonio de Padre on Rancho Rinconada (now part of Hillcrest) in present-day La Mesa. padre founded this mission after hearing about earlier missions near Tubac and Carmel Valley. In 1823 Ensign Lorenzo Mata discovered oil fields in what is now Buena Park while searching for ships lost in Mexico during Mexican War of Independence. The discovery soon made La Mesa one of the most importantoil centers in America because it became possible to refine refined oils here without going through Mexico City or other major cities where transportation costs would have been prohibitively expensive. In 1892 John Pemberton developed Pembertons Landing where he found good land for development that included homes, businesses and schools around what are now Harbor Drive and Broadway Streets SE. By 1902 more than 1,000 people lived here including 150 businesses; three churches – Our Lady of Guadalupe Anglican Church (1893), Sts Peter & Paul Catholic Church (1902)and Royal Dutch Shell Company Building (1910). "Pemberton Landing" has since been renamed "La Mesa" after him due to his name being associated with that location since then

La Mesa is a small city in the San Diego County, California metropolitan area. It is located on the eastern edge of the City of San Diego, and it is bordered by La Jolla to the south, Carlsbad to the east, Huntington Beach to the north and Garden Grove to the west. The population was 43,898 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to reach La Mesa were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his men who sailed from Navidad in 1542 looking for a new route to Asia. They came ashore on present-day La Mesa Island on November 11th 1542 after crossing from Santa Barbara Peninsula into southern California. On October 25th 1543 they named their land San Miguel de la Mesa which means "Mountain of Our Lord." In 1821 Mexican land grants were made available for Rancho Santiago del Oro which became part of what is now La Mesa when Mission San José was established there in 1821 by Father Francisco Javier Vargas. The town began as a tiny settlement near what is now US-101 with only six settlers in 1825 when gold was discovered nearby at Sinaloa Heights. In 1860 Anglo American miners discovered claims near where US-101 meets I-805 and quickly organized an effort to block their progress through force or threats until they abandoned their claim in 1865 after realizing that no money could be made off them without access to water supplies necessary for mining operations
La Mesa was founded in 1875 by John S. Chapin and James H. Knight as a small agricultural town on the San Andreas Fault. It became an incorporated city in 1912 and annexed the neighboring towns of La Crescenta and Monterrey in 1934. The population of La Mesa reached 105,000 by 1940, but declined to 82,000 by 1960 due to World War II damage and migration to other areas of Southern California. The city's population peaked at 171,000 in 1990 before slowly declining over the next decade.
