The Model "A" Rifle was often used by farmers and ranch hands for hunting game such as deer, rabbit, and squirrel. In 1902, William A. Caldwell imported a number of French-made rifles into the United States from France. These rifles were called the "Chasseur de l'Est". These guns were very accurate and could shoot rounds up to 350 yards without error. They were also powerful enough to take down large game animals such as lions or bears. In 1923, the National Firearms Act passed which changed how firearms were purchased and shipped within the United States. This act banned handguns but allowed shotguns, rifles, pistols, revolvers (except those with extractors),and machineguns to be bought and sold without registration or License plates. This law also provided money bonuses for dealers who sold more than 1 million items per year on firearm sales alone! In 1934, President Franklin D Roosevelt signed legislation that created Castle Doctrine which stated that anyone who semiautomatic handgun did not have right to self-defense if they ever encountered aggressive behavior from another person; this law is still in effect today!

La Mesa was first settled by Mexican Americans in 1853 on land east of what is now the city of San Diego. In 1892, the United States annexed La Mesa and renamed it after Major General Philip Sheridan (1799-1865), an American general who fought in Mexico's War for Independence and later became commander of U.S. forces in California during the Mexican War. The community's history dates back to when Mexicans began to arrive in San Diego County as early as 1853. They founded small villages near present-day Mission Bay and La Jolla before moving to central San Diego County in search of farmland or other opportunities for agricultural production. By 1890, many Mexicans had left Southern California for new opportunities in Northern California due to economic conditions there. Some remained behind and continued farming while others established businesses such as lumberyards and stores on their original holdings. In 1912, local citizens approved annexation by the City of San Diego because they saw it as an opportunity to increase commerce and business opportunities within their own townspeople boundaries rather than allow city services such as water supplies, schools, or Streets & Avenues to be provided exclusively through county government coffers. The vote was unanimous and acceptance came with no opposition from either party; Mayor John Fenton had already voted against annexation two years earlier when he unsuccessfully sought reelection on a platform that would have kept La Mesa under county control instead of giving it over entirely to the city’s jurisdiction. Since 1912, growth has been gradual but steady within La Mesa; development has taken place throughout most of its existing western side including portions adjacent to Interstate 805 which bisects its southern border Original settlers included primarily Spanish-American families who arrived seeking land grants along with newer waves Of English-, Welsh-, Irish-, Japanese-, Chinese-, Dutch-born residents who arrived after World War II In 1960 la mesa had a population of 9500 people
The City of La Mesa was incorporated on February 12, 1887. The first mayor was George H. Wellman. The original city plat included a small square block in the center of town and four blocks north of that on what is now State Route 158. In 1912, the City Council approved an ordinance providing for a water supply from an underground spring and to create a street grid with numbered streets leading from the spring to various points in the town. In 1917, La Mesa became part of the newly created County of San Diego and remained so until 1959 when it became independently governed again as a city through Proposition V, also known as "La Mesa's charter amendment". On January 1, 1984, La Mesa voters passed proposition H (Measure HH) which granted city status to its citizens. It remains an unincorporated community today despite its incorporation into Las Vegas Boulevard & State Route 158 in 1912
