La Mesa, California is an incorporated city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 27,711 at the 2010 census. It lies on the eastern edge of San Bernardino and is bordered by Ontario to the south and east; Diamond Bar to the north and west; and Riverside to the northwest. The name La Mesa comes from a Spanish word meaning " remainder." A post office was established at La Mesa in 1872, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. The first settler in what is now La Mesa was José Gomez who arrived with his family in 1871. Gomez named his land Rancho del Arroyo de las Mujeres (Rancho of Woman's River). In 1876 John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort on East Mill Avenue which became known as Sutter's City after him. In 1880 George Cranch Purchase added 640 acres (248 ha) to Sutter's holdings including present-day La Mesa. In 1902 James Hahn bought 1,000 acres (500 ha) of land east of town from Wm Hahn for $850 cash from George Chaffee. He renamed it Four Mile Canyon after his four daughters who had died young while living near their father’s mining claims: Alma Fenton Hatch (1881-1965), Gertrude Molnar Hatch (1883-1964), Alice Barden Hatch (1885-1973), Maynard Ballou Hahn Jr.(1887-1976). On January 3, 1912 voters approved incorporation of La Mesa by vote of 5–2 with one individual not voting due to illness or military service; this action marked the first time that cities have been incorporated within their respective counties since beforeaptering statehood in 1911. On July 16, 1913 mayor Francisco Jarrin offered a gift of two shotguns to each voter for use during city elections that fall but these were never accepted as donations because most citizens did not own firearms at that time. A post office called Redlands opened at Redlands on December 12th 1914 (). As mail traffic increased between downtown Los Angeles and Redlands it proved difficult for farmers outside town to get deliveries so on February 14th 1915 Postmaster Edwin Ladd decided to close Post Office #1 & open up Post Office #2 instead which allowed more people into town during off hours when there were no deliveries being made inside the old building stuck behind high school which served as a storage facility for materials used by local residents such as plasterboard & siding etc... The new building cost $5,000 () originally built by Wm Coryell but is now owned by the City & has been leased out for housing purposes since pre 1960sWhen Valley View Elementary School went online in 1997 it also took over responsibility for providing internet access services through Cable TV providers throughout much of Southern San Bernardino County including parts of Rancho Mirage & Cathedral City
