La Mesa is a small city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 17,191 at the 2010 census. La Mesa is part of the larger city of San Diego. The first Europeans to visit what is now La Mesa were Spanish traders and missionaries in 1821. In 1828 Mexican land grants were given to Juan Bautista de Anza and Felipe Carrillo by Mexico City for his exploration of the southern border of California. The area became known as Rancho Anza after him. In 1849, prospectors discovered oil wells onshore near present-day La Mesa; this began an oil boom that continues to this day. In 1870, the town was platted and named La Mesa after General José María Cárdenas y Quiros, commander of Mexican forces during the American Civil War who had been captured at Buena Vista Palace in 1862 by Ulysses S Grant's army under Lieutenant Colonel John D. Sloat (). Cárdenas was released from captivity in 1865 and resumed his political life in La Mesa; he donated land for a public school and hospital which still stand today. In 1912, William Randolph Hearst purchased 2 miles (3 km) east of present-day I-5 along North Harbor Drive from Refugio Indians for $2 million (). Hearst used it as a ranch until 1969 when he sold it to local businessman Don Herbert Ladd (). Ladd developed much of downtown La Mesa before retiring in 2009; he left behind a large park called "Herbert Park" which includes two golf courses, two tennis courts, several restaurants and movie theaters as well as some original buildings dating back to 1915 including one courthouse built by Ladd himself (). On May 6th 2013 Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced that they would be demolishing all but 1 wall between downtown LA and El Centro because they believe it hurts economic development within both areas combined...There are plans underway for redevelopment on approximately 10 acres located east of Herbert Park (including 8 lots currently leased or owned by HOA fees/restrictions), with most likely construction beginning prior to summer 2014 or early fall 2014."

The first people to live in what is now La Mesa were Native American people who hunted game in what is today known as Coyote Hills. A post office was established at La Mesa in 1872, and until 1912 it was called "Hemet". In 1912, voters approved a measure creating a city government with an assessor-council system. The first mayor of La Mesa was James Fenton Doherty. In 1916 Mayor Doherty recommended that an expressway be built through town connecting I-5 with North Park Boulevard which would have given La Mesa an easier access into San Diego County than it had before. In 1968, when City Manager Roy Latta took over from Mayor Doherty, he determined that there were too few tax dollars available for new projects so he cancelled all but one of Mayor Doherty's planned initiatives including street repairs, new parks and libraries etc.Latta also began efforts to bring more commercial development into town which has since led to increased property values for residents within town limits as well as outside of them .On July 14th 2018 Mayor Latta announced his resignation effective immediately due to health reasons after 19 years leading La Mesa
La Mesa was founded in 1853 by José Antonio García and his wife, Marcela. The town was named for the Heights of La Mesa Hill, about 15 miles east of San Diego. In 1858, La Mesa became part of the Mexican state of Sonora. In 1912, it became a U.S. military post during World War I and again in 1945 during World War II. It is now a census-designated place (CDP) in Imperial County, California.
