By 1865, La Mesa had reached its peak population with 1,500 inhabitants; however, within two years following discovery of new gold fields near Stockton, the population plummeted to 350 due to competition for jobs brought about by burgeoning industry. It wasn't until 1882 that Bishop Isidro Lopez reopened Los Angeles Mission #2 (now known as Cathedral City) after numerous failures due to drought and erosion which had ravaged the Missions’ holdings across present-day Kern County for several decades prior. After presiding over many conversions among local Native American groups during his stay hereabouts (and later becoming “the father of modern Mexican Catholicism”), Lopez left instructions for priests stationed at various missions throughout Baja California (later Arizona) including those at Pueblo de Nuestra Señora de los Angeles (present-day Mexico City), San José del Río (Rosselló), Mexicali and Tijuana – all now part of Mexico City metropolitan area – to evangelize natives there also and help proselytize others throughout central Mexico not just along mission walls but beyond them into Huastec territory east of Mariposa Pass through much today’s Sonora desert region where Apaches still roam today strongholds such as Yuma Crossing National Monument notwithstanding efforts by United States Army Rangers assigned hereto support civilian law enforcement efforts against outlaw bands operating therein…. In 1908 Mayor Harry Wohlstromrequested $5 million from Congress in order “to build schools and other public works necessary for our growing city” under then Secretary Of Commerce Charles Evans Hughes – this so called La Mesa Waterworks Project would provide water distribution services to residents within city limits without having recourse either to private companies or municipal wells thereby solving one major problem faced by municipalities northwestward thereof primarily: lack of ahanced water sources available immediately adjacent or contiguous thereto…..During World War II streetlights were installed throughout downtown La Mesa starting on October 3rd 1942 while work continued apace on Stonington Avenue between First Street & Tower Drive side streets…..On November 15th 1942 Mayor Wohlstrom signed an ordinance creating El Dorado Park which comprised 8 acres southwest corner lot number 2123 extending northwesterly thenceforth along First Street northeasterly.. Streetscape changes implementing Republic Plan were made beginning on intersection Third Street/First Avenue….El Dorado Park ultimately closed circa 1961 when annexation into City Limits caused its boundaries expanded resulting in increased traffic congestion……Today what once constituted only 4 blocks long(just eastbound First Street from Main Street intersecting Fourth Street) remains home principally To Residents Of South El Monte & North El Monte Villages Addressing issues arising From Increased Traffic Speeds resultant From Sprawl In Area resultant In Slowdowns Onowntown Roads Resulting In Larger Class Size Classes At School District Levels
