During World War II, La Mesa served as an important munitions production center due to its location along I-5 and its close proximity to major military installations including Draperhyde Army Air Field and Buena Vista Army Air Field. The post office moved from its original building at Fifth Avenue and West Riverside Drive in 1945 to its current location across from City Hall Park in 1961 after being displaced by construction of I-5 highway exit ramps adjacent toCity Hall park! In 1959, when San Diego County became an independent state, much of Imperial Japan's remaining territory within San Diego County including La Mesa were annexed into the new county as part of its annexation process; however, some Japanese Americans who had been living in La Mesa continued to reside there until 1974 when all Japanese Americans living in San Diego County were relocated pursuant to Executive Order 9066 which targeted all people deemed as "enemy aliens." Although most residents had moved out by then, a few people (mostly women) remain behind where they continue today as farmers and retirees looking out over their property upon a beautiful coastal community with easy access to both Interstate 5 and points north
