In 1906, during World War I, United States forces burned down part of Spanish Fort (now downtown San Diego), destroying much valuable trading stock within Mexican territory that had been captured during the war effort as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. As a result of this event and others like it throughout California's far northwest corner during the war years (the region now known as Baja California), new settlers began pouring into San Diego County and its adjoining centers such as La Jolla and Escondido seeking land grants and opportunities for development beyond what they could find on their homesteads or Ranchos lying within Mexican territory east of Sorrento Valley (modern day Oceanside). In 1890 James Waddell erected his summer home at present-day Lakeshore Park on parts of land grant known today as Sunland Park south of Interstate 5 along North Coast Highway 101 west of Main Street just north of Lakeshore Drive (approximately between Lakeshore Boulevard and Interstate 5). By 1897 more than 50 people were living at Lakeshore Park including some sixty tenant farmers who grew crops such as grapes and olives near by for sale to visitors coming through town on Highway 101 or touring Sunland Park Estates via cars or horseback rides across sun-drenched valleys flooring high above ocean waves views unobstructed except for occasional sailboats docked offshore) . To provide transportation to/from lakeside properties located inland various ways such as boat launch ramps obstructed only by tidepools sometimes rising several feet high , walking paths extending inland from shoreline with interpretive signage providing insights about early pioneer days activities these features are included hereinbelow This network enabled access not only hitherto inaccessible coastal areas but also interior valleys with rolling hills covered with chaparral
The La Mesa area was a Spanish rancho that stretched from present-day San Diego County in the south to Yuma County in the north. The rancho was divided into adobe blocks, and each block was subdivided into Ranchos. In 1848, José Maria Cuevas acquired part of the Rancho Encinal de la Bahia de las Palomas from Manuel Nieto and sold it to Pedro Menéndez. Mexican land grants were given to men such as Juan Bautista Alvarado, Francisco Ortega y Gasset, Antonio López de Santa Anna, Vicente Guerrero and others. In 1883, following gold discoveries at Sespe and Comayagua in New Mexico Territory, American settlers began arrive in California. A small group of them founded La Mesa on May 8th of that year by placer mining near what is now Ocotillo Road. The town grew quickly because of its close proximity to new goldfields and its position along rail lines which made it easy for miners to get product home. In 1912 La Mesa incorporated as a city under the name of "Mesa". It experienced rapid growth during World War II when local businesses became involved in wartime production activities such as munitions manufacturing or aircraft assembly; however, after the war endedLa Mesa declined rapidly in population until the 1990s when suburban development began changing its character once again
