The name "La Mesa" was given to the western side of town because it was then said that there were no trees on that side of the bay available for sails or timber shipment. This story may have been based upon an incident where local Native American husbandman refused to give up their exclusive right to gather acorns from oak trees near Mission Bay until white men stopped arrives at their homes with ships every year seeking saltpeter (a key component of munitions production). In 1848, a group of Americans who had decided they wanted to live in Southern California came across a postcard reading "Come see us at our new place called La Mesa". They made contact with one another through letters and soon formed what would become known as the Old Mission Road Company - later becoming known as The Hacienda Brothers Real Estate Co., Ltd., but originally called The Mission Road Company - which bought 1,500 acres (600 ha) along missions bay between Callaghan Street and State Route 66 east of present day Smithfield Road south of Interstate 5 so that they could build "a nice home", clear away brush, plant vineyards etc., naming it after their original discovery spot which still stands today: la manzana de los Padres Francisco Xavier Chavez y Garza (the apple tree from Padre Chavez's farm), now just eastside State Route 66 north of I-5 between SR-66 and I-5 exit 205A (formerly SR-66 & SR-166). La Mesa, California is a small town in the East Bay region of San Francisco. It is located at the intersection of State Route 12 and Interstate 680. The community has a population of about 26,000 people as of 2016. La Mesa was founded in 1887 by Mexican immigrants as Rancho La Mesa de Santa Clara. The name change to its current form in 1916 when the United States annexed parts of Mexico, creating the U.S.–Mexico Border Treaty dispute over which side should get to use that name. The first post office was opened in La Mesa on November 15, 1886, by Hiram Stevens Grant. Rancho La Mesa became part of the city of San Francisco after California became an state in 1850. On December 17, 1912, Mayor William Fenton dedicated a new park named Park Boulevard at what is now downtown La Mesa after his predecessor's dedication of Central Park South two years earlier. In 1923–24, Municipal President Harry Elmer Barnes developed plans for a shopping center called The Lakeshore Shopping Center on what are now eastbound I-680 and westbound State Route 12 south of town center (then just eastside Avenue). This project failed because it would have been built on land that already belonged to City Hall and other civic institutions; instead it was abandoned after only six months when no one came forward to develop it despite offers from many developers. In 1984–85, residents voted to annex portions of neighboring Livermore Valley into La Mesa through annexation polls held before then-Mayor Dianne Feinstein's appointment as mayor following her election victory over Gavin Newsom with 53 percent support against 38 percent opposition among all voters living within city limits at that time. However this effort failed due to lack of voter turnout statewide; livermore valley annexation proposals were revived later that year by then-Councilman Don Ohlendorf with 66 percent support against 34 percent opposition among all voters living within city limits during his first term as councilmember following his election victory over Mark Leno with 50 percent support against 44 percent opposition among all voters living within city limits during that year’s mayoral race).
