La Mesa is a small city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 15,579 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego–Tijuana metropolitan area and lies on the border of both countries. La Mesa is located about 20 miles (30 km) south-southwest of downtown San Diego and 30 miles (50 km) east-northeast of downtown Tijuana. The village of La Mesa was founded by Mexican Americans in 1847 as Santa Anita Rancho de la Peña. In 1852, it incorporated as a town under the name Pueblo de la Union. On October 16, 1914, La Mesa became one of seven municipalities within the new City of San Diego when that city was established by an act of Congress following the November 8 general election in which Manuel Alvarado had been elected mayor without opposition. In 1942, after World War II ended and Japanese American citizens were reclassified as "enemy aliens," many people in La Mesa voted to become an all-American community by subscribing to a petition campaign led by Mayor Richard Acheson that called for similar action against Japanese Canadians living elsewhere in California. The campaign failed but generated public interest in anti-Japanese feeling throughout California during 1944 and 1945; this led to increased federal attention to Japanese American residents throughout southern California during those years. On December 12, 1945, President Harry Truman signed Executive Order 9066 which ordered all persons who were not naturalized citizens or U.S.-born children of immigrants to be deported from their places of residence within ten days regardless of any legal status they may have or any benefits they may enjoy; this order also deprived much innocent family violence related to immigration problems for future generations upon its implementation). As a result of the executive order most people who lived within three miles (5 km)of Los Angeles were immediately deported while people living further away—such as La Mesa—were given five days’ notice before being taken away with no opportunity for appeal or return home. Many Japanese Americans who had never left Japan were rounded up and arrested without warning or trial destinations such as Oroville or Imperial Beach where they would have been released if they could prove their innocence; these detainees are now known collectively as “theLAJAs” because Los Angeles did not deport them all immediately.)
