La Mesa, California is located in the southern central portion of San Diego County. It is bordered by the city of La Jolla to the west and east, and Escondido to the north. The population was 26,613 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit what is now La Mesa were Mexican traders and soldiers who traveled along the Pacific Coast in search of new land to colonize. In 1821, José María Cámpora discovered a large piece of land that he named Rancho Descansado after his father-in-law, Manuel Descansado. The first white men to live in La Mesa were Juan Bautista de Anza and his family who arrived in 1825. They built an adobe home on what is now Main Street. As more settlers arrived, they began developing agriculture and ranching techniques which allowed them to increase their wealth and power over local Native Americans. The old mission that used to stand on this site was replaced by a building known as "The Alamo" in 1851. The Alamo became one of San Diego's most prominent landmarks, hosting political rallies and being used as a hospital during both World Wars I and II. In 1883, James Wickersham bought 100 acres (40 hectares) near present-day downtown La Mesa from José Gomez for $1 million dollars which he used for agricultural purposes only until he sold it back in 1903 for $2 million dollars due to increased interest from developers throughout Southern California. Wickersham had been interested in buying property adjacent to Mission Trails National Historical Park since he saw it on a map while traveling through Southern California looking for properties for development into town squares or bedroom communities like Encinitas or Dana Point where people could drive out their homes during hotter months so they could enjoy all that Santa Barbara hadto offer without having their families living inside heated buildings all year long! It wasn't until 1915 when developer Hiram Sperry decided he wanted develop a large community called Grovetown off Interstate 805 just east of present day La Mesa whereupon Wickersham donated another 100 acres (40 hectares) next door including some of his original land plus an additional 10% across street corner rights! This settlement came about because Sperry felt that if you developed big enough tracts of undevelopedArea there would be no one left around hereabouts willing or able ever again to purchase any property adjoining any arterial streets providing water delivery services necessary theretofor; so much so that prior theretofore nothing but scrub brush filled chaparral had ever intervened betweenHarbor Beach Boulevard running parallel theretowestwardly throughunrestricted open space withinLaMesa Valleyand underlying surface water courses lying athwartsthelatitude 33° 53' Northlongitude 118° 00' Westwitnessing firsthandthe great potentialitiesoffriendly cooperative neighborhoodgatheringassistancefromall quartersduring its early yearsit soon became apparentthatGrovetownwouldbecomea giantenterpriseofnational importanceandan unprecedented boomnew centerofcommerceand cultureonthesouthwesternfrontierofamerica

In 1959, portions of Walnut Creek Canyon were patented to the University of California at Berkeley for use as a research park. The canyon has been used for hiking and biking trails since then and has become one ofBerkeley's most popular tourist destinations because of its beauty and serenity.
La Mesa was founded in 1853 by Captain James Brougham and his party of pioneers. The town was named for the La Mesa Creek which runs through it. It soon became a thriving community, with a post office, school, and churches. In 1876 the railroad arrived in La Mesa and began to bring industry and jobs to the town. Over time, La Mesa grew into an important community with a population of over 1,000 people.
