In 1853, John Sutter founded the City of Pasadena on land he had purchased from Mission San Miguel de la Mesa ranchers grazed for grazing purposes near Alhambra Creek and about four miles east of present-day La Mesa Boulevard. He named his new town Pasadena because it was where he found buried money belonging to his father-in-law, Juan Bautista Alvarado. In 1857, when Pasadena grew too large for its original site, Sutter sold his holdings back to Alvarado and relocated his people to what became La Mesa with newly acquired land southeast of present day Interstate 10 and east of State Route 91 (the old route between downtown Los Angeles and Orange County) known as Rancho San Pedro y Las Palmas de las Gualdanas because it was then owned by two prominent local landowners: Don Jose Acosta (alias Pico) Sr., owner of a sugar refinery on Hollywood Way northwest of Lankershim Boulevard; and José Antonio Yorba (alias Oroño), owner orija (a Mexican term meaning “cow”)of extensive Agricultural lands comprising some 1 million acres extending from Porterville eastward through Sylmar Heights southward along Murphy Canyon southwest to Canoga Park northwest to White Sands Beach westward into Riverside County).
