In 1904, a rifle company was started in La Mesa by George D’Angelo and his friend, Harry Higginson. The company became known as the George D’Angelo Rifle Company and produced rifles until 1919. In 1922, the company changed its name to the American Rifle Company and continued producing firearms until 1951.
La Mesa is a small city located in Kern County, California. The population was 21,487 at the 2010 census. La Mesa is part of the Bakersfield–Los Angeles metropolitan area. The first European to visit La Mesa was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542 and he noted that the area had an abundance of oil wells. In 1887, John Sutter discovered gold near what is now downtown La Mesa and began exploiting the resource. By 1912, over 20% of all U.S. production from gold came from La Mesa-area mines. In 1915, Henry Hagee became the first person to own land in present-day Kern County when he acquired 1,500 acres (500 ha) northeast of town for $5 per acre ($20 per hectare). A year later, he sold another 500 acres (250 ha), making him one of the largest landowners in Kern County history. He eventually donated his land to college education and research institutions including UC Berkeley and UCSB as well as other local colleges and universities. As early as 1853, prospectors were finding gold on Mexican soil but it wasn't until 1870 that a group led by Captain William Folsom started mining claims around present-day La Mesa/Taos Valley area which would become known as Folsom Mining District because so much gold was found thereabouts including Placer Gold Mine (1871), First National Bank (1872), Yankee Hill Mines (1875), San Fernando Mine No 2 (1877) and Second National Bank Building Site #1 & #2 near today's Antelope Valley Road & US 395 north of townard intersection just east of Pahokee Lake on Rancho Adobe Indian Land owned by José Reyes de la Vega y Gorrego who also operated Don Jaime's Rancho Las Animas about 25 miles westwestnorthwestoftownsite northwestofPahokeeLake onRanchoAdobeIndianLand southwestof today'sLas Animas Boulevard

They named their settlement "Mesquite" after a tree that grew abundantly on the farmstead. In 1851, Mexican nationals arrived at sanDiego bay to seek passage to America on ships called la Mesilla. They landed at what is now Point Loma, and soon established small villages along the shoreline. In 1854, following annexation of San Diego by California, La Mesa became part of San Diego county. The city's growth continued until 1910 when it was annexed by Los Angeles as part of that metropolitan area's growth. By then, however, La Mesa had regained some of its former prominence as a commercial center and has since become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Southern California.
La Mesa is located in San Diego County, California. It was first settled in 1826 by the Mission Indians and was named after Mexican General Manuel Nieto. The area now known as La Mesa was part of Rancho Santa Fe until it was granted to José Canales in 1853. The name may have come from a Comanche word meaning "a place where the white people can go to fish." In 1859, Colonel Jesús Reyes purchased the Rancho La Mesa from José Canales. The ranch passed through several hands until it came into the ownership of John Sutter in 1876. He sold it to his brother-in-law, George Hearst, Jr., in 1880. Hearst developed the area around La Mesa for housing and commercial purposes.
