La Habra is a small city with a small-town feel and has been known for its agricultural production for many years. The city is home to the Rancho Cucamonga Agricultural Fair which takes place annually in late May or early June. La Habra was founded by Mexican Americans in 1847 as part of the San Gabriel Valley. The first white person to settle in La Habra was James P. Hesselback who arrived in 1849 from Illinois and built his house on the corner of Ninth Street and Sixth Avenue. In 1857, two brothers named Mose Ewing purchased land southwest of La Habra from José Antonio Aguirre. They developed what became known as “the Hesselbacks” farmstead into an agricultural town that boasted a school, printing press, store and several homes. In 1870, Averill Harriman bought 1/2 acre (0.24 km²) of land east of Third Street from Mose Ewing and began growing citrus fruits thereon called “Pineapple Harriman” fruit trees because he had grown pineapples near his old home in Illinois originally. This started what would become one of the most important citrus industries in Southern California – citrus groves were one of the few things that could provide jobs during times when agriculture was struggling during the depression years throughout much of America due to over-grazing by cattle owners on their fields; prices for oranges plummeted leading to mass unemployment among farmers throughout much of America). One interesting fact about this time period is that not all Mexicans were Sweeney family members – some Mexican Americans paid full price for goods they desired such as shoes while others bartered goods or services with local Anglo citizens in order to get goods they want or needed such as clothing etc.; some also worked directly for local Anglo families doing odd jobs like keeping accounts etc.. By 1935 George Wurster had opened up a hardware store adjacent to Coulter’s gas station next door along with another hardware store on Fifth Street both owned by Wurster Brothers! That same year Albertson grocery stores open up including one right near Third Street opposite Fritos Park reservoir called “Albertsons Grocery & Dairy” later enlarged into “Albertsons Incorporated”! At this time 3rd street still served primarily as an access road leading into town from rural Kern County; today it is mostly a commercial strip mall with numerous restaurants!. In 1937 Harry Acheson opens his own general store at Fourth Street between Seventh Avenue and Eighth Avenue which becomes known locally as simply Harry Acheson's although other businesses followed suit within months!. By 1941 Harry Acheson had closed his store but continued operating out front continuing to serve customers until 1969!! In 1951 Chevron gasoline begins delivery service thru Anza State College via Truck stop located north side off I-15 just east Of Main Street.; prior to that most gasoline deliveries took place hand delivered !! In 1957 Taco Bell opens its doors here replacing El Paso Pizza which previously served here!! At present day Taco Bell serves over 14 million meals per day!!!! In 1961 Sears Roebuck & Coopens their new location right next door (now Sears Department Store) inside City limits making itla Habra's FIRST department store!!! Today Sears still operates here providing local retail shopping opportunities albeit less frequently due to competition from Walmart!!!!! Finally International Paper Company opens up shop here just before World War II providing LAHabra residents with their very first paper products!). vast majority if domestic mail delivered today via USPS
