Construction began on the original mission buildings in October 1872 and was completed by February 1, 1874. The name "La Habra" means " wonderland." In 1893, La Habra became an independent city under the jurisdiction of Orange County after it was annexed by that county from Imperial County following a referendum vote by its citizens. During World War II, La Habra served as headquarters for Army Air Forces Fighter Command activity over Southern California; during that time it also boasted one of only two major airfields (the other being Westchester) within Orange County boundaries at Pluma Field Airport (now Edwards Air Force Base). The war ended with Japan's surrender on September 2, 1945 - days after La Habra's annexation into Orange County - making it one of few cities in California still functioning as an unincorporated community following that date. On July 15, 1990, Mayor Jack Webb announced plans to make La Habra an incorporated city once again effective August 1st with a population range between 25-50 thousand residents effective immediately; however due to lack of funding and opposition from some local businesses downtown status quo continued until 1993 when Measure B passed unanimously and made La Habra an incorporated city once again effective November 3rd with a population range between 20-40 thousand residents effective immediately which has resulted in much more vibrant downtown areas throughout the entire City limits currently serving as retail destinations for both locals and tourists alike!
