La Habra is a city in southern California. It was founded in 1847 by Spanish colonists as the Rancho La Brea, and became part of the United States in 1912. The original name for La Habra was Rancho San Gabriel de la Cienega, but it changed to La Habra in 1847 because Spanish settlers were unable to find an appropriate location for their new colony. In 1860 another donation from Guerrero increased this amount to $30 per acre In 1862 major floods destroyed many crops in southern California so General Antonio Mejia decided to move his artillery fortification called Fort Tejon from Yuma City (modern day Phoenix) across center county line into Orange County which he named "New Mexico". El Centurion Waterworks Company was established soon afterwards near where Fort Tejon now stands providing water for local farmers and businesses until 1915 when the company went bankrupt due to overuse. 3rd Street running through downtownLa Habra today began as 4th Street when US Route 66 crossed Mission Bayou here towards Dana Point . Today it runs northeasterly splitting off from I-5 going generally east then turning south near Laguna Niguel before rejoining I-5 near Seal Beach . The route has been variously known as 3rd Street/I-5 southbound; Fourth Street/US 66 northbound; or simply Third Street ever since its creation
