The first permanent settler in what would become La Habra was Pedro Menendez who arrived in 1776 with his family from Santa Ana. He named his property "Habra" meaning "headquarters." In 1848, George Wickersham patented an acreage within present-day La Habra for $10 per acre. A post office called La Habra was established in 1851, and remained in operation until 1951. In 1871, Charles Hennepin built a lumber mill on the south side of Present-day San Fernando Road between Crenshaw Boulevard and Diamond Heights Drive. The company town atmosphere which characterized much of Southern California during this time soon dissipated when it became clear that Hennepin had not actually built any mills; rather he leased land to other developers who built mills on it. In 1872, Hennepin sold his interest in the company to John Sutter who renamed it Sutter's Mill Company Ltd., later becoming Northern Pacific Railway Company Limited (NPC). The railroad arrived just as agricultural production began to grow rapidly hereabouts; consequently there were few houses or other structures erected until after 1916 when a very large new engineering school was constructed by NPC at what is now known as Imperial Valley College adjacent to Interstate 5 near Pioneer High School (now Imperial Valley College West Campus), hereafter IVCW. This massive project included all aspects of heavy engineering including aqueducts and canals systems; remodeling of old buildings including Donnybrook Elementary School into a Science Center and various other facilities for instruction and research; replacement or rehabilitation of over 150 miles (240 km) worth of track from Oakland to Long Beach through heretofore unimproved areas along many different valleys; while also providing much needed jobs for locals during World War I and II when aviation took off across America due largely to Japanese investment in automobiles! Today nearly all traceable evidence left behind by NPC includes architecturally significant remnants still extant such as: original underground powerhouse & turbine shafts beneath Imperial Valley College campus today; locomotive tender shed ( abandoned since 1966 ); photo cells used by engineer’s assistants back then (& still extant ), some dating back even further than that! All told these are examples illustrating one simple fact - railroads really did impact our lives profoundly well before they disappeared entirely out west… local people worked hard doing the grunt work while bigots ran things! During WWII construction continued unabated with an additional 2 million sq ft (171 m²) being added onto IVCW resulting in increased classrooms, labs etc.; but again everything came to an end when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor leading then US president Franklin D Roosevelt authoring Executive Order 9066 which banned all travel within Japan by Americans therefore ending all economic activity inside thatgyou! That said though infrastructure damage still remains throughout much today's southern Orange County today – more importantly however many parts thereof remain unrepaired thereby preserving valuable industrial history & Heritage for future generations!
