In 1847, the Mexican population of California was 1 million. The United States had just won its independence from Mexico and in that year, President James K. Polk appointed General George C. Marshall to lead an expedition against Mexican forces in what is now known as the Tehachapi Ranch War. General Marshall's force numbered almost 400 men and women including 38 Americans, 31 Mexicans and 7 Chihuahuas who were brought over as enlisted help. On July 25th of that year, after days ofcombat and only one American killed, the Mexicans retreated back into Mexico City. A week later, on August 2nd, General Marshall announced his success in capturing 180 Mexican cannons and horses as well as a number of chests of gold coins which sum total $3 million dollars at the time (the equivalent of $102 million today). The successful campaign set off a wave of immigration to America which would continue until 1850 when Mexico ceded California to the United States permanently. La Habra was founded by Juan Bautista Alvarado in 1795 on land that he purchased from local Native Americans for $1 per acre (about $24 per km2). The town grew rapidly due to its location along major wagon route between San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles Valley; however, it experienced heavy flooding during several years due to rains upstream from present-day La Habra Boulevard (now Interstate 5). In 1868–69, water levels reached such high levels that parts of town were inundated for up to 12 hours each day; however this did not deter development because transportation was then available only by boat or horseback through swollen rivers which formed behind hills near downtown La Habra. As early as 1853 there had been talk about building a railroad through what is now downtown La Habra but no action was taken until 1862 when businessman George Washington Goodwin bought land east of city limits and began construction on the first section called “Laguna” which connected with Southern Pacific Railroad mainline at Red Bluff before reachingpresent-day downtown La Habra In 1863–64 another group organized by entrepreneur Wm Hargrave started construction on what became known as “Aliso Viejo” Junction where today's main streets intersect: Prospect Avenue (west), G Street (north), Broadway (east), Vinegar Hill Road/Highway 99W/UCLA Campus Drive (south) The first train through downtown La Habra arrived on May 6th 1865 courtesy of Northern Pacific Railroad Company passenger train #10 from Red Bluff
In 1868, La Habra was founded by a group of American Mormons who had come to California in the ship "Oscar IV". The town became an important port and commercial center for the region. It was also a headquarters for the Mexican–American War. In 1915, La Habra was renamed after Major General John J. Pershing, who had fought in that war.
