Today, many residents still use Gaelic as their primary language but also participate in English conversations whenever possible because it is more comfortable for them than using American Sign Language or other alternative methods of communication. In addition to its traditional foods and culture such as bagpipes playing and haggis being eaten at feasts, this community also celebrates Scottish independence day annually with events such as flowerarranging contests and kilts worn by all involved.

The community was founded in 1903 by Irish immigrants from Laois. The name comes from a Creek word meaning "flat place." At its peak, La Canada had about 2,000 residents. However, since the early 21st century, it has had a population below 1,000. The first post office in La Canada was opened in 1903 by John Ahern and James McCormick. In 1912, the community organized itself as an incorporated village under the name of "San Francisco." The name change came after San Francisco's mayor objected to it being called "La Canada Flintridge" because he felt that it would give away too much information about the location to potential visitors. In 1925, La Canada amalgamated with nearby Canadian Village to form what is now Fresno County.[1] In 1951-1952,[2] La Canadan Christian School (later known as Presbyterian Children's Home) moved from San Francisco to La Canadan and began serving students in grades K-12 from both villages. In 1957-1958,[3] First National Bank moved into an old gas station on Depot Road and begins providing banking services for both communities[4][5][6]. A new elementary school was built in 1960,[7],[8], while a new high school opened in 1984.[9][10] In 1992-1993,[11],[12], local parents lobbied unsuccessfully for passage of Measure C which would have established bilingual education opportunities for all children living within 500 feet of any public or private school district with a majority Spanish language instruction program; however this measure failed to pass with only 38% support.[13],[14]: 521–522
