The Flintridge, California fire lookout tower is a structure located in La Canada Flintridge, California that has been used as an observation post for theLa Canada Flintridge Volunteer Fire Department since 1892. The tower is also the location of the first recorded use of firearms by firefighters when they used them to shoot at a coyote in 1898. The current tower was built in 1929 and was dedicated on October 14, 1929. It was purchased from the County of San Bernardino by the La Canada Flintridge Volunteer Fire Department. The tower is also one of only a few remaining structures original to La Canada Flintridge. When it opened, the tower had a view of all of La Canada Flintridge and parts of surrounding communities including San Gabriel Valley, Gardena and Cathedral City. In 1951, when aerial photography became available, the tower was modified to include an obsidian reflector so that firefighters could see objects more clearly from above during fires. When it became clear that efforts were being made to control forest fires using helicopters instead ofFirefighters using cannons and pistols during both World Wars resulted in less need for lookout towers like the one located in LaCanada Flintridge; however, some towers still remain operational today such as those located at Mount Vernon Village and Malibu Creek Ranch.

La Canada Flintridge is a small, unincorporated community in Kern County, California, United States. It lies northwest of Florence and southeast of Stockton. The community was founded in 1904 by French Canadian settlers who named it for the La Canada River. The original town had a post office and five stores. By 1916, the population had grown to twenty-one people. In 1922, the first school was built and the first doctor was appointed. In 1951, a fire destroyed much of the original town center and most of the buildings were replaced with new ones; however, some old properties still stand today. In 1962, La Canada Flintridge became part of Interstate 5 when it was realigned through Kern County; it no longer has its own ZIP code.
In 1836, La Canada Flintridge was founded by Manuel Fontana and his brother Antonio. The community grew quickly due to its location close to the central business district of San Francisco. By 1849, the population had reached 400 residents. In 1850, the first school in La Canada Flintridge was built and it served as a primary educational institution for the community until 1915. In 1902, the La Canada Flintridge Post Office was founded and remained in operation until 1974. In 1916, the first public works project in La Canada Flintridge was started by Mayor-elect James Fenton with assistance from Governor John T. Richardson III. The project included construction of a water system and associated infrastructure. The town continued to grow rapidly during World War II with an influx of soldiers who were needed for military training at nearby Fort Point National Monument. During the war, more than 100 businesses were established in La Canada Flintridge including 20 breweries and 25 grocery stores. After World War II, many of these businesses closed down but some continue to operate today such as Anchor Brewing Company which is located on Main Street between laCanadaFlintridge High School and Rancho Cucamonga Memorial Library
