La Canada Flintridge is a census-designated place in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 9,965 at the 2010 census. La Canada Flintridge is part of the Fontana–Wadsworth Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to come to La Canada Flintridge were the Hupa Indians who built their villages near what is now known as Water Valley Road and Indian Springs Lane in 1827. In 1851, Captain John Clements discovered gold on his trip from Sutter's Fort through La Canada Flintridge and named it for himself, La Cañada Flintridge (the hill). In 1859, J Broughton founded a post office at what is now Flower Street and Indian Wells Lane. In 1886, an irrigation canal was dug through La Canada Flintridge by Wm Fenton and Company. By 1909, when Proposition 8 passed which banned any form of racial discrimination in public housing developments in California, most of the white residents had moved away while black residents continued to live within the community until they were given choice of moving out or integration into existing public housing projects in other parts of town. The last white resident died in 1984. La Canadia Flintridge has a large number of farms that are still used today for agriculture such as hay production/storage; fruits and vegetables; dairy products; chicken coupes/eggs/fries; turkey hunting/gathering; and rabbit trapping/slaying operations etc., as well as small businesses that provide goods or services such as internet cafes, hair salons etc., all located within walking distance from each other throughout the community center which also includes a library with computer access for students inside during school days or evenings when classes are not being offered outside outside of normal school hours (Monday-Friday 9:00 am-4:30 pm). The families named their home "La Canada." The first post office at La Canada was opened in 1848. It was located on what is now First Street. The original Postmaster General was James Snedeker. In 1851, John Hutton bought the post office from James Snedeker. He renamed it "Hutton's Station." In 1853, Caiaphas Pendleton purchased the post office from Hutton's Station. He renamed it "Pendleton's Station." In 1865, John Witherspoon acquired the post office from Caiaphas Pendleton. He renamed it "Witherspoon's Station." In 1870, Jens Bendix acquired the post office from Witherspoon's Station. He renamed it "Bendix' Depot." In 1875, George Ahern bought the postoffice from Jens Bendix. He rename it "Ahern's Depot." In 1880, Augustus Farnsworth bought the postoffice from George Ahern. He rename it "Farnsworth' Depot." From 1886-1892, Oscar Riddle ran this depot as an express stop between San Francisco and Los Angeles; he also served as postal inspector for Kern County during this time period
According to the 1860 census, La Canada Flintridge was a small town of about 100 people. However, by 1870 it had grown to over 500 people. The town prospered due to its natural resources and its close proximity to San Francisco. In 1884, La Canada Flintridge became part of the City of San Francisco.
