The town was named after the small Canadian village of La Canada on the lower Colorado River. The population of La Canada Flintridge increased rapidly during the early years of its settlement, and by 1903 it had reached a peak of 1,500 residents. However, during World War II La Canada Flintridge was among the communities that were targeted for bombing raids by the United States military. Nearly all of the buildings in the community were destroyed, but some survive as ruins today. The story of La Canada Flintridge begins with two families who arrived in 1887: John and Eliza Marsden and their children Harry and Addie Marsden. John’s father had come to California from Nova Scotia to work as a spike driver on wagon trains heading westward. After landing at San Diego Bay he journeyed upriver until he found work at an agricultural fair near Redlands Creek where he met Eliza’s mother, Mary Ann (née Hildebrandt). In 1875 Mary Ann married George Hildebrandt and they moved to Ontario,Canada where she raised their five children: Harry (1876-1958), Addie (1878-1964), Louise (1880-1965), Norman (1882-1972) and Marion (1884-1966). In 1887 John Marsden decided to move his family to California because he wanted a better life for them than what he could find back home in Ontario. He took out a $1,000 loan from his friend James Weston and started downriver with his family. They arrived at San Diego Bay on December 9th, 1887 – just three days before Christmas! The Marsdens spent wintering with friends Ned Fenton and his wife Emmaline at Big Bear Lake before moving inland towards Rialto Creek on January 3rd 1888. On January 15th18888 John set out up Rialto Creek himself “in company with others forming an improvised wagon train for Beginnings” according to one account[1]. With only 24 wagons they made it all the way downriver until they came upon an opening known as “the gully” which would later become known as Rialto Canyon[2]. From here they continued making their way through difficult terrain until they reached Topanga Canyon on February 8th1988[3]. There they stopped for provisions while George Hildebrandt built a cabin near Clearlake Springs[4]. John eventually erected another cabin within sight of Topanga Canyon; this one became known as la Canada Flintridge [5] . By this time there were already several other families living there including Isaac Dorman’s family from Richmond Hill,[6] Phebe Sargent’s family from Thousand Oaks,[7] Ethel Chamberlain from Hanford[8], Jane Addams from Lincoln Heights,[9] Joe Shields from Wilmington[10], Augustus Herron from Glendale Heights[]11]and many more future settlers who will be remembered throughout history! Unfortunately much like most pioneer settlements la Canada Flintridge experienced speedy growth followed by rapid decline over time due primarily to natural disasters such as floods or fire.[12][13][14][15][16][17][18]} For example between 1888-1900 there were only 5 families living there when fires destroyed 4 homes; however by 1910 it had grown back to 10 households thanks largely to donations received by local churches [19],[20],[21],[22]- leaving behind memories of laughter and hope long After these destructive events!
