This rancho stretched from what is now Fountain Valley to neighbouring Atascadero and included much of what are now parts of San Marcos and Carpinteria counties. He also built a mill on his property that still stands today; this mill used water from nearby Loveland Lake to power turbines that produced electricity for both their house and mills until 1957. In 1903, John Sutter bought Rancho la Parilla from José Joaquin Cisneros; he renamed it Sutter's Terra Bella (later Mariposa) after his plantation colony in Africa where he had acquired some shares in slave ownership early in his life). In 1916, John Sutter died suddenly at age 82 years old; his widow sold most of her holdings to become an individual donor to many different charities including Mariposa Grove Gardens located adjacent to Sutter's Terra Bella today). This high concentration led some residents to refer to themselves as "Mormon settlers." By 1941 only about 10%ofLaCanadaFlintridge's population remained descendants of LDS pioneer families while most hadigrated elsewhere during that period; however many residents remain converts today. Today much has changed since those days including increased traffic on SR 84 past LaCanadaFlamboro Road making it difficult for most residents access their farms or businesses outside their homes day and night; however many continue practicing Mormonism with strong ties to family and friends across state lines
In 1836, La Canada Flintridge was founded by Captain John Sutter as a station on the California Trail. The name means "The Hill of the Flint Ridges" in the local Chinook language. The community grew quickly due to its location near the Mexican border and its easy access to goods and services. In 1840, Captain Sutter built a sawmill and gristmill in La Canada Flintridge. The milling industry declined during the 1850s, but continued to grow during the 1860s when new transportation methods made it possible for people to bring their products further away from Mexico City. On January 15, 1867, La Canada Flintridge became an incorporated town under state law. It remained an agricultural center until after World War II when it switched to become a bedroom community forLos Angeles County.
