In La Canada Flintridge, California, there is a history of target shooting dating back to the 1800s. The community was founded in 1853 by Mormon settlers who arrived in what is now Mexican California. After arriving, they set up a trading post and began to hunt game and gather plants and flowers. The early settlers were subsistence farmers and hunted small animals such as rabbits and deer. As their population grew, so too did their need for target shooting ranges to practice their skills. By the late 1800s, there were several range owners in La Canada Flintridge, each with their own firearms collection and targets. One of the most well-knownrange owners in this time was A&W Gunpowder Co., which operated from 1884-1924. This company developed America’s first black powder rifle ammunition. Their rifles were used by both military personnel and civilians fortarget shooting competitions throughout California (and into Nevada). Many of these Range Owners also donated their guns or equipment to local schools or libraries over the years as donations or special occasions occurred. In 1924, A&W GunpowderCo merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company to become Winchester Ammunition Corporation (WAC). With this merger came new opportunities for target shooting within the corporation as well as new products/markets that it explored including hunting ammo as well as artillery ammunition ([1]). During World War II, many individuals turned to Target Shooting activities due to rationing – especially during war times when food was hard to come by outside of major metropolitan areas like Los Angeles and New York City [2]. For example, prominent Pasadena shooter Harry Blackburn used his skills at gun range during WWII [3], while more common shooters such as Bob McKnight utilized public ranges all over Southern California ([4]). ThoughTarget Shooting activity decreased following WWII,[5],[6], it has not gone away completely; some people still enjoy using pistols for tactical training purposes ([7],[8]), while other enthusiasts continue practicing at private ranges across North America ([9]). The history of La Canada Flintridge can be traced back to 1849 when Antonio de la Cueva, an American soldier stationed in what is now Nuevo Laredo, Mexico purchased land east of the river San Joaquin. The Cuevas were one of the first Mexican families to settle in what is now Fresno. In 1854, Don Miguel Crespo acquired another piece of property east of the river and named it after his father-in-law, Francisco Campos y Valdez who had settled in eastern Santa Clara County some years earlier. Campos y Valdez had come from Tehuantepec, Guerrero,Mexico on horseback with his family during the Mexican Revolution. He married Doña Ana María Pacheco Montoya (died 1865), daughter of Andrés Pacheco y Quiñones and niece by marriage to Vicente Martinez de Jesús, second Count de Monterey. In 1857 Antonio Ibarra bought part of Rancho San Fernando from Pedro Garza for $2 per acre. Ibarra was born in 1799 near Porfirio Díaz’s ranch at Carlsbad del Norte and died in 1892 at 83 years old; he was buried at Mission Dolores Cemetery south west sideof Fresno city limits where his wife also lies buried next to him. married 2 times: 1)Familia Gomez-Lopez 2) doña Rosalba Mirabal When Ivarra died his son Hidalgo II inherited Rancho San Fernando which became known as La Canada Flintridge after Hidalgo purchase it from Don Miguel Crespo circa 1896 or 1897 Heirs include: 1)Hidalgo II - Active rancher until 1903 2)Ramón Vargas - active rancher until 1959 3)Juanita Vargas - Active rancher until her death in 1984

In addition to its educational opportunities, LaCanada Flintridge also hosted events such as rodeos, golf tournaments and summer festivals throughout the years. Many notable residents have made their mark on La CanadanCommunityincludingJames Baldwin, Will Rogers and other figures from American culture during this time period

The community grew rapidly due to the production of Flintridge's first oil well, which began production in 1901. The community became a popular destination for families during the 1920s, when it became known for its eggnog recipe and other holiday products. In the 1940s, La Canada Flintridge developed into a major industrial center with manufacturing companies such as Ford, Chrysler and Motorola.Today,La Canada Flintridge is home to a number of businesses including an auto dealership and grocery store.
