Many famous actors, athletes, and musicians lived or spent time there during their careers. In the 1940s and 1950s, La Canada was home to many Japanese American Citizens who were forced into internment during World War II. After the war, many of these residents relocated to other parts of California. Today, LaCanada is a small town with a population of about 175 individuals. The history of LaCanada Flintridge begins with the arrival of Scotsmen in 1879. These men were farmers who had come toranch land northeast of Los Angeles on what is now called Rancho Santa Anita Boulevard (now part of State Route 54). The site that they chose for their farm was within sight of Mount Palomar Observatory which then consisted only of two building fragments and one large tree! The first house built on this parcel was used as an animal barn until 1886 when it was replaced by a more permanent farmhouse which still stands today. During the early years of its existence, La Canadia operated as an Agricultural Center where people could sell produce from their fields and purchase goods necessary for their subsistence lifestyle including meat, milk products, eggs, butter, flour and other essential items needed for daily life on the rancho while also enjoying access to education offered through local schools like Mt Palomar School District #2 which also included children living at Rancho Santa Anita Boulevard near present day Exposition Park boundaries! In 1902-1903 after being purchased by ranchers George Higbee & wife Emmeline “Minnie” Higbee from Scotland Milne Bros., Ltd., L&P Auctioneers Ltd., J P Murphy & Son auctioneers; all 3 entities formed The Higbees Farms Cooperative Store store society! With over $4K raised thru auctions thru out Orange County; cornerstone stone laid Feb 1st 1903 under direction Mrs Emmie Higbee Nee Murphy!!! This location served as general store open 7 days/week!! Apt style single story green Building w/ veranda overlooking active stables!! 2 stories high!!! Mrs EmmieHigbieNeeMurphy passed away Nov 25th 2006 aged 91 yrs old…. longtime resident her daughter Linda married Dec 12th 1996 Charles Wiebe Jr.)
