During World War II, La Canada Flintridge served as headquarters for various military units including the U.SArmy Air Forces Ninth Air Force and Eighth Army during Operation Overlord (the Normandy invasion). The La Canada Flintridge, California history begins in 1846 when the family of Abram and Catharine Flintridge settled in the area. The Flintridges were farmers and ranchers who had a ranch onranch located about six miles west of present-day La Canada Flintridge. Abram Flintridge was born in Ireland in 1814 and came to America with his father, John Flintridge, in 1836. He began farming near where he now lives and eventually became a prosperous landowner. In 1886, Abram Flintridge donated land to build the first school in La Canada Flintridge. The school was built on what is now the corner of First Street and Broadway Avenue. In 1897, Abram Flintridge died at the age of ninety-eight years old. His wife, Catharine, continued to farm until her death in 1931. She is buried at Green Lawn Cemetery adjacent to her husband’s grave. Catharine (Abram)Flint Ridge School: Catharine (Abram)Flint Ridge School opened on September 8th 1897 as one of two schools founded by Mrs Abram J Flt ridge at LaCanada flintridge . It served children from ages 6 through 12 years old until 1949 when it was closed due to budget limitations . The building still stands today and is used for storage by local businesses
