Shields, who arrived with his family from Illinois in 1852. At that time, there were only about fifty people living in La Canada Flintridge and most of them were farmers or their families. The first school was organized in La Canada Flintridge in 1861 by Mrs. Fenton and Mrs. Healy. The school operated for one year before it was closed due to lack of funding. In 1865, John Sutter founded Sutter's Land Company which purchased 640 acres (2 km²) along Locke Road from Mr. Shields for $5 per acre ($147 per hectare). This purchase made LaCanada Flintridge the largest farming community in California at that time and laid the foundation for what would become Sutter's City Limits development project later on! Eugene Debs came to California during the Civil War and established himself as an organizer and public speaker around hereabouts; he used this platform to bring together various political factions gathered around him into one cohesive unit which he called "the Working Men." debs' home Villa Clara became a model laboratory for social work experiments being conducted by Drs., Charles Whitman & Benjamin Woodward at Palo Alto University during these years; it is still extant today as a museum open to the public (www://www1austin360www). In connection with Eugene Debs' visit hereabouts, Doctor Davey staged an outdoor vaudeville performance entitled "Debs Addresses His People" on October 12th & 13th1868 - tickets are still available at www1austin360www/. Edward Everett Hale also visited America during this time period - his reports back home helped spur passage of legislation creating Social Security Disability Insurance program soon afterwards!
