La Canada Flintridge is a small town in California, located about 30 miles north of Los Angeles. The population was 3,878 at the 2000 census. La Canada Flintridge is part of the Pomona-Ardsley-Merrittville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named for La Canadienne (Canada) and Flintridge (a rural locality in Kern County, California), both being settlements near what is now Truth or Consequences Indian Reservation. When the United States Congress passed the Indian Act in 1830, it included a provision that all "native nations" be divided into tribes and their lands allotted to them according to their numbers. This section of the act was known as the McKee–Larkin Grant Act, because it gave land to John McKee and George Larkin for development near Truth or Consequences Indian Reservation. In 1851, when gold began flowing out of the San Bernardino Mountains and nearby deposits became available for mining, settlers started arriving from areas such as Ontario and Sacramento. By 1858, there were 10 families living in La Canada Flintridge. In 1861, one family moved from Ontario to take up land grants near Truth or Consequences reservation.. When silver began flowing from nearby mines in 1868-9 through hydraulic fracturing (a process used today to extract oil and gas), people realized this could be done here too. Mining operations continued until 1918 when alluvial goldmining stopped due to bad weather conditions; however lead production continued until 1936 when arsenic production also ceased because lead arsenide was not sustainable under high pressure levels encountered during processing In 1902-3 five men organized what would become La Canada Flintridge School District #2 which operated schools before statehood occurred in 1923 . The first school building burned down on October 7th 1903 but rebuilding quickly ensued with an addition built in 1904 that still stands today - Cooley Hall! Classes first started inside on February 15th 1905 after construction of Central High School had been completed! A new gymnasium - Alumni Gym – opened on November 5th 1912! The old gymnasium became home field for both Central High School football games as well as cultural events like shows etc which were staged there through out those years
The La Canada Flintridge area was originally part of the Rancho Santiago de Santa Clara Indian Reservation. The first European to visit the area was Pio Pico in 1769, and he named it after his hometown of La Romana, Mexico. The first white person to live in this area was Don Lorenzo Sanchez in 1836. In 1881, a post office called Rancho Santiago de Santa Clara was established at the intersection of present-day State Route 134 and San Bernardino Street. The population of La Canada Flintridge grew steadily from its early days until World War II when it decreased as a result of the war and subsequent decline in farming activity. In 1946, an act to create incorporated municipalities within Los Angeles County was passed by the California state legislature. La Canada Flintridge became one of those municipalities.
