La Canada Flintridge is located about 30 miles (48 km) east of downtown Los Angeles. The population was 9,623 at the 2010 census. The area that now makes up La Canada Flintridge was first inhabited by Mono people. In 1847, Mexican traders found gray quartzite in what is now La Canada Flintridge and began selling it as lead ore to Anglo-Americans. The discovery made LaCanada one of the richest settlements in California. In 1853, surveyors named the town after Mount Hamilton, which stood near present-dayOntario Road and Umpqua River (now 7th Street). The town’s early years were very rough; during its formative years there were only a few dwellings and no schools or other public amenities. But even during these tough times, people persevered because they saw opportunity in this new land. In 1887, a group of American pioneers led by James Burton arrived in La Canada Flintridge from Oregon with plans to start a new life onranch called “Mountain Meadows” northeast of Ontario Road on what is now Rancho Palos Verdes Boulevard (). They built their house – still standing today – on what would become known as Burton Place () and started farming their land which became one of the most successful ranching operations ever undertaken within California. Their success story inspired others to follow suit and more settlers poured into LaCanada from all over America starting up businesses such as mercantile stores, post offices, hotels and churches . By 1910 there were over 1,000 people living in LaCanadaFlintridge (). During World War II many local men contributed their time and skills to serve our country both militarily and civilly through various industries such as munitions production (), rubber work (), shipbuilding ()and aircraft construction (). After the war ended many returned home but some stayed behind to continue building community infrastructure like roads (), water systems (), parks ()and libraries (). Today we continue celebrating our cowboy heritage with annual rodeos , chuckwagon rallies,, carnivals,, fairs & elections every year!
