La Canada Flintridge is a small city in Kern County, California. The population was 8,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. La Canada Flintridge is located on U.S. Route 101 and Highway 188 between Big Bear Lake and Bernardino County. The community was founded in 1912 by Presbyterian missionaries when they arrived in central Kern county to serve as missionaries for the Methodist Episcopal Church of America. In 1915, the town name was changed to La Canada after landowner James LaCanada donated 640 acres (256 hectares) of land for a new city council district with seven blocks square each, named after him and his wife Anna Belle Wheeler LaCanada and their two children: James Jr., then age six, and Jeanette Belle LaCanada, then age two years old. The original City Council buildings were destroyed by fire in 1921; but new council chambers were built on the site of what are now school buildings with additions made throughout the years including a swimming pool which opened in 1977 and remains one of the main attractions for residents today. In 1957, La Canada became an incorporated city under state law following its merger with neighbouring Big Bear Lake. La Canada Flintridge, California is a small town in the San Bernardino County of California. It is located on a plateau overlooking the city of San Bernardino and it was founded in 1887 by John C. Sprague. The name honors General James La Canada, who served as military governor of Mexico during the Mexican-American War and as United States ambassador to Mexico City. The town has a population of only about 500 people today but it played an important role in early Californian history. The first permanent settler in La Canada Flintridge was John C. Sprague, who arrived there in 1887. Sprague built his cabin on the edge of what is now known as Sprague's Valley, which he named after General James LaCanada, who had helped lead American forces against Mexican forces during the Mexican-American War. Sprague also donated land to the town for development and helped fund its construction. The first school in La Canada Flintridge was built by Drury & McNaught in 1893, and soon afterward other businesses began to open up around the town. In 1907, La Canada Flintridge became part of San Bernardino County when it was created from parts of Riverside County. In 1912, voters in La Canada Flintridge approved amendments to their local charter that allowed for a single trusteeship system with five members instead of eight original trustees elected every two years by property owners across the town limits; this change came about due to concerns that some trustees would be too powerful within the community and would use their power to manipulate business decisions or withhold support from local businesses. After more than 20 years serving as trustee, incumbent Leroy Hodge resigned effective July 1st, 1959 due to health reasons; he had been serving since December 2nd, 1958 following predecessor George Ladd's appointment six months earlier on October 3rd。 Leroy Hodge's replacement was Verna Jane Bottoms (1910–1974), who served until her death on December 25th 1974 ().Bottoms' tenure saw many changes at LACanada Flintridge; she first became involved with education issues when she became chairwoman of LA Canadan School District No., Incorporated (later renamed Southern Kern Unified School District) which opened up new schools throughout southern Kern county after World War II ended.; she also worked closely with then-Governor Ronald Reagan during his time as mayor (); finally, she focused on developing tourism opportunities forthe community when she took office as Mayoralty Deputy Director for Tourism/Economic Development ()
