La Canada Flintridge is a town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. La Canada Flintridge is located on the east side of San Bernardino County and is bordered by Riverside to the north and east, Fontana to the south, and Calabasas to the west. The name "La Canada" honors General Antonio López de la Hoz who fought in Mexico City during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). Flintridge was first settled by Europeans in 1847 as part of Rancho los Nietos. A post office called La Casona was established in 1852, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1903, a group of settlers led by Capt. George Fife went into partnership with Payson Wirtz to create what would become La Canada Flintridge. The town's first store opened its doors on December 12, 1903. In 1951, LaCanada became an incorporated municipality under state law following passage of Proposition 13 which repealed all local government functions within San Bernardino County including city status for towns with over 15 thousand residents or more than one hundred fifty employees. After years of growth and development without any major fire or incident taking place within the community%, voters approved incorporation via referendum on November 5th 2006 by a vote of 59% to 41%. La Canadia has since experienced rapid growth with almost 1 million people living there as of 2019

La Canada Flintridge was founded in 1851 by John and Emma Flintridge. The small community located in the east San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County was named after the La Canada Flintridge Ranch, which John and Emma purchased in 1847. The ranch was a retreat for wealthy members of the LA area. La Canada Flintridge was one of many small communities developed aroundLA during the 1850s as railroad transportation increased throughout California. The first stop on the Santa Fe Railroad near La Canada Flintridge were two stations: Pico Alto and Eureka Springs. In 1852, when construction began on the Central Pacific Railroad, LaCanada Flintridge became its terminus. With this new connection to larger markets, businessesultaneously opened up in the town including grocery stores, sawmills, breweries and other factories. In 1857, John and Emma passed away leaving their children to take over running the community. Their son-in-law David Strauss took over operations until his death in 1916 CE; subsequently David's widow Lillian Strauss ran the community for 43 years until her death in 1984 CE. During World War II, LaCanada Flintridge played an important role as a munitions plant due to its location close to various military sites such as Hollywood Studios and Dodge City Army Air Field. After World War II ended, most of what remained of LaCanada Flintridge turned into housing developments while some portions were preserved for educational purposes. Today remnants of LaCanada Flintridge can be found among Echo Park neighborhoods off Bel Air Road.
