At first it was just a post office with no residents living there; however, because of its location on Hwy 101 near Interstate 5 and deep into Kern County, it soon became known as one of the most popular places to live in Kern County. Flintridge has several shopping malls including one within walking distance of all three schools which serve as primary residences for many people in this rural community: elementary school students attend South Mountain Elementary School (just east of I-5), middle school students attend North Mountain Middle School (west of I-5) and high school students attend Lakeview High School (just south of I-5). The only other significant shopping center is a large Walmart which opened up in 2006 at the former Sanger Paper mill site just north of town limits
